It is funny to me that during the Cold War the Russians shot down an American Spy Plane that was flying over Russia. And did nothing about it.

Wooden U-2 model - one of two used by Powers when he testified to the Senate Committee. The wings and tail are detached to demonstrate the aircraft's breakup upon impact.

The U-2 Incident

Main article: 1960 U-2 incident (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_U-2_incident)
Powers was discharged from the Air Force in 1956 with the rank of captain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_(U.S._Air_Force)). He then joined the CIA's U-2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_U-2) program at the civilian grade of GS-12. U-2 pilots flew espionage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Espionage) missions using an aircraft that could reach altitudes above 70,000 feet (21,3 km), making it invulnerable to Soviet anti-aircraft weapons of the time. The U-2 was equipped with a state-of-the-art camera designed to take high-resolution photos from the edge of the stratosphere over hostile countries, including the Soviet Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union). U-2 missions systematically photographed military installations and other important sites.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)]

Soviet intelligence, especially the KGB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KGB), had been aware of U-2 missions since 1956, but they lacked effective counter-measures until 1960. Powers’ U-2, which departed from a military airbase in Peshawar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peshawar), Pakistan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pakistan)[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Gary_Powers#cite_note-unattn-2) and may have received support from the US Air Station at Badaber (Peshawar Air Station (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peshawar_Air_Station)), was shot down by an S-75 Dvina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-75_Dvina) (SA-2 Surface to Air) missile[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Gary_Powers#cite_note-3) on May 1, 1960, over Sverdlovsk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yekaterinburg). Powers was unable to activate the plane's self-destruct mechanism before he parachuted to the ground and was captured.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)]

Powers' U-2 plane was hit by the first S-75 missile fired. A total of eight were launched;[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Gary_Powers#cite_note-4) one missile hit a MiG-19 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiG-19) jet fighter which was sent to intercept the U-2 but could not reach a high enough altitude. The Soviet pilot, Sergey Safronov, crashed his plane in an unpopulated forest area rather than bail out and risk his plane crashing into nearby Degtyarsk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degtyarsk). Another Soviet aircraft, a newly manufactured Su-9 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Su-9) in transit flight, also attempted to intercept Powers' U-2. The unarmed Su-9 was directed to ram the U-2. The pilot attempted but missed because of the large differences in speed. Powers claimed, as recounted in "The Skunk Works", that upon ejecting he saw the parachute of another pilot deploy behind him.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)]

When the U.S. government learned of Powers' disappearance over the Soviet Union, they issued a cover statement claiming a "weather plane" had strayed off course after its pilot had "difficulties with his oxygen equipment." What CIA officials did not realize was that the plane crashed almost fully intact, and the Soviets recovered its equipment. Powers was interrogated extensively by the KGB for months before he made a confession and a public apology for his part in espionage

HA!! See there was never a time when the CIA were not liar cowards. Why didnt USA do something? Russia shot down a US plane with a CIA guy in it. And what does USA do about it? Hides. And tells lies. (:

A confession and a public apology. HAAAA!

Aftermath

Powers received a cold reception on his return home. Initially, he was criticized for having failed to activate his aircraft’s self-destruct (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-destruct) charge to destroy the camera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camera), photographic film (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photographic_film), and related classified (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classified_information) parts of his aircraft before his capture. He was also criticized for not using an optional CIA-issued "suicide pill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_pill)" to kill himself.[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Gary_Powers#cite_note-7)

Do you guys think the CIA scum coward should have killed himself? It would have been the only action to take wouldnt it?

Anyway, think about how much of a pussy USA was to allow Russia to do this. USA is a liar. See, now that Russia is being aggressive the Americans do not know what to do because America is and always has been a massive pussy. USA has only ever picked fights with nations that had no hope against them and in WW2 the USA came in late as well as allowed Russia to do the most important fighting. USA is a fucking vulture.

The so-called history of the 'Cold War' glosses over the fact that USA was a pussy. We also have the nonsense idea that the Russians were backward as far as technology goes but how do you explain them winning the Space Race? ( They were never putting a man on the moon. USA did that after the Space Race was already lost. USA is a fucking dickhead. Always has been. USA were the dumb stupid fucks that didnt know how to read. Look at literacy rates. USA is a fucking liar.

What do you think of CIA coward Francis Gary Powers and his humiliating confession and apology? In you opinion, why is USA such a massive pussy?

What ought the US have done?

The pilot was supposed to kill himself rather than be captured.

Im just just fucking with you. (: But if he was a good Nazi he would have taken his pill. Right? I agree that he should have killed himself. What other action could he take? His honour had no chance of surviving that. For his own sake he should have given himself an honourable death. Not to mention for the sake of his nation and countrymen.

Now he is an eternal punchline. He walks Hades as a clown. Everyone laughs at Captain Powers. He is a joke that will live on through the ages.
