As they await an Illinois primary vote whose outcome is hardly assured, Mitt Romney is betting his message of economic proficiency will resonate with Republican voters more than Rick Santorum's sharply honed conservatism.

Both men were competing for the 54 delegates at stake Tuesday in Illinois. They were looking to score a victory in a state that was not only home to President Obama, but is also one of the last major battlegrounds before a three-week lull in April.

Tuesday's primary comes on the heels of Romney's overwhelming victory Sunday in Puerto Rico, a territory Santorum courted at the expense of spending time in Illinois.

Though Illinois is expected to be far closer than Puerto Rico, recent polls indicate Romney may be pulling away.
Even if he should lose the popular vote, Romney is poised to win the delegate battle. Santorum cannot win at least 10 of the state's 54 delegates available Tuesday because his campaign didn't file the necessary paperwork.

Again, Santorum is looking at a state he can't fully compete in because of a lack of paperwork.

What? What's wrong with staffs these guys hire? Are they all incompetent volunteers?

I woud guess that it came down to money and manpower when the registration deadlines closed. Maybe it was way back before Santorum had any momentum at all. I'm just guessing here. Otherwise it's just horrible management.

It's awful. It's unforgivable in a small state let alone Illinois.

So MMC you voting in this bad boy? Seen the light on Santorum yet?

edit: oops, you're in Indiana, right? Even so, living out of state never stopped anyone from voting in Chicago. Heck even dead people vote there.

Yeah I remember those good ole days when we all dress up as Irish cops and go and vote 3 or 4 times in the election to keep Daley in Office against any other Demo. Specially ones coming in from Washington or NY.

Eat a few Donuts and come outta there with our eyes all glazed, talking Union shop, renewable energies, and gun control.

Course then we were told we had to stay outside the city for seven days and we were to bath and cleanse ourselves.
