View Full Version : Man-made noise disrupts the growth of plants and trees

Stoney

It alters birdsong and can make it difficult for some predators to hunt, and now it seems that man-made noise also affects plants.

A US team found that industrial noise disrupted the behaviour of animals that pollinate plants and disperse seeds.

This, they suggest, could be slowly transforming our landscape, especially by changing the dispersal of slow-growing trees.

You know it's coming. It's not just a quality of life issue now. It's a matter of saving the planet!

Yep, we have those ordinances too. Guess if ya out in the rural areas one doesnt have to worry about that shiznit. one thing is for certain it affects people to. Because anytime I am sleeping and I hear big azz trucks around and or Lawn Crews. I'm just not sleeping anymore that day.

You guys are probably going to make fun of me (what else is new ) but sometimes if there's noise around, like kids playing in the street, I'll turn on this website. Especially at night it's very soothing.

We'll have to have a number of tests to determine what levels of sound don't harm the environment and then hearings to determine what those test show and then we'll need a new agency to regulate sound. We obviously can't call it the Global sound Agency (GSA.) We'll have to call it something else. Whatever that new agency is called it will be tasked with distributing sound level sensors and people to man specially equipped vans to determine the source of the offending noise.

I envision a new huge granite building in DC to augment this meager government.

I almost always turn a fan on and I leave the TV on 'til about 3 or so. I like white noise.

Yep, their solution is always to add a new government agency, as if that ever solved anything. If those agencies ever do their job too effectively, they're rewarded with budget cuts and job closures. So why would a government agency want to be effective?

They're suppose to wait until 8am in our suburb. Which when it comes to money and towns giving out those permits. They figure they'll go where the money is.

I just moved last year so I'm not sure what time you have to wait to but I'd imagine it's 8AM or later.

Its worse than we know Stoney.....

Ever since humans first invented guns, they've been inventing new uses for them. Some shoot bullets; others shoot lasers (http://www.tecca.com/news/2012/02/01/xappr-gun-atk-preorder/). But a strange and unsettling new gun being developed by Japanese researchers shoots sound waves in an effort to disrupt and silence anyone who dares speak out of turn.

The gun operates based on the concept of delayed auditory feedback. An attached microphone picks up the sound being made by the target and plays it back 0.2 seconds later. The effect is incredibly confusing to the human brain, making it all but impossible to talk or hold a conversation. The device doesn't cause the person it's being used on any physical harm — it simply messes with their head.

When the human brain hears its own speech perfectly in sync during normal speech, it easily processes the input and allows you to largely ignore the sound of your own voice. However, by offsetting the response just a bit, the brain hears your mouth speaking as well as the strange echo effect produced by the gun. This unusual combination is confusing enough to effectively shut down the part of your brain responsible for managing speech, and you fall immediately silent.....snip~

Plus our Military has a sound device that can make ya puke and shatter ones eardrums and even cause one to have hallucination.

Or peoples dogs barking uncontrollably. I'm not sure if I should be neighborly and approach these people directly about it, or just call the police.

Depends I guess. If you know them it's probably best to approach them. So...about your dog...

 It's quite a stretch to spin that around on me, but "A" for effort and for the laugh. Actually, my aunt has a dog that barks and the police were called here before. We're diligent about keeping it under control, with a bark collar and everything. These others leave their dogs outside and they bark like crazy.

Oh, well I could only interpret "So...about your dog..." to say that I was originally speaking of calling the police on my neighbors because my own dog was barking. My bad I guess, I took it differently than if it would have said "So...about that dog..." I don't mean to be touchy.

I bought a big (er) screen over a year ago and it hasn't been turned off since. I can't even sleep without a radio or the TV going.

That's wild. I need the whole house quiet to sleep. If there's noise and it's the summer, I will use a fan for white noise.

Our neighbors play horseshoes sometimes and that metal clank drives me batty. They don't do it late at night / early morning though, so that's good.

I can agree with everything but the rock music. What really gets under my skin are thumping bass speakers, I really can't stand that crap. A person should not have to be assaulted by that noise.

Yeah, I'm just being a grump. I love rock as long as I'm the one playing it. I agree with you about the bass, that crap pisses me off when I'm in my own home or car and can hear someone else's.
