CBO: Obamacare will have lower premiums, insure more, and cost government less than projected

by Joan McCarter

That whole "Obamacare is doomed to fail" line from Republicans is getting harder and harder to defend by the day. A new report from the Congressional Budget Office makes their protestations sound even more ridiculous. The top line finding:

Relative to their previous projections made in February 2014, CBO and JCT now estimate that the ACA’s coverage provisions will result in lower net costs to the federal government: The agencies currently project a net cost of $36 billion for 2014, $5 billion less than the previous projection for the year; and $1,383 billion for the 2015–2024 period, $104 billion less than the previous projections.
The other good news:

Health insurance premiums are lower than CBO originally projected, saving the government $190 billion;
"12 million more nonelderly people will have health insurance in 2014 than would have had it in the absence of the ACA;"
The number of uninsured will fall to 30 million by 2017 and will remain there through 2024, absent other reforms;
The projection made originally in 2012 that the ACA would reduce the deficit is still valid, and deficit reduction is greater than anticipated two years ago.

Additionally, they project that premiums will rise only "slightly" in 2015, by about $100 for the mid-level plans that have proven to be the most popular in the exchanges. They also say that those premium hikes will be caused more by increasing health care costs than the having more and sicker people—those with pre-existing conditions—now in the risk pool.

Lower premiums, 12 million more people insured, lower costs to the government and further deficit reduction. Try repealing all that, Republicans.

‘Their Nightmare’

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=nGzEZ5Ezv4E

With more than 7 million Americans signing up for health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act, critics who predicted its collapse are instead dealing with “their worst nightmare,” Sen. Bernie Sanders said on Monday.

“First, the United States remains the only country in the industrialized world that doesn’t guarantee health care to all of its people as a right. Second of all, the Republicans have opposed the Affordable Care Act from day one – it is their nightmare that it succeeds. Thirdly these are the same guys that want to end Medicare as we know it, convert it into a voucher program, who want to make massive cuts in Medicaid, who had eight years under Bush to do something – even a little thing – about health care, they did nothing. So these guys have nothing at all to say. And their nightmare is as millions of people begin to get affordable health care, as the Medicaid program expands and people who never had health insurance in their lives finally are able to go into a doctor – for the Republicans this is a nightmare. Imagine that the United States government does something for ordinary people and not just for billionaires – what kind of nightmare is that? That is their fear, Ed,” Sanders said in an interview with Ed Schultz on MSNBC.

Bundy Ranch Militia Considered Using Women As Human Shields The fine gentlemen who threatened violence against the federal government, even though they’re wrong about who owns the land, were going to use women as human shields.

The Blaze, the conservative news site affiliated with Glenn Beck, flagged the comments made Monday by Richard Mack, identified as a former Arizona sheriff who had joined more than 1,000 other protesters alongside Cliven Bundy, who has been feuding with BLM over his use of federal land to graze his cattle.

“We were actually strategizing to put all the women up at the front,” Mack said in a Fox News clip pulled by The Blaze. “If they are going to start shooting, it’s going to be women that are going to be televised all across the world getting shot by these rogue federal officers.”
