Early in the evening of April 22, 2004, a heavily armored vehicle in the trailing half of a split platoon came under attack from enemy fire in the rugged mountainous terrain of southeastern Afghanistan. Soldiers in a Humvee opened fire in retaliation but instead shot at fellow Rangers positioned ahead, killing Pat Tillman and an Afghan soldier standing 10 feet off Tillman's left shoulder. The former NFL safety - the Army's most celebrated volunteer - took three bullets to the forehead.

Steven Elliott (http://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-pat-tillman-soldier-10-years-remorse-20140420,0,4004238.story#axzz2zd3STORR) was likely the Ranger who shot Tillman.

"It would be disingenuous for me to say there is no way my rounds didn't kill him, because my rounds very well could have,” Steven Elliott said in an interview (http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/10791530/ex-army-ranger-speaks-first-former-nfl-player-pat-tillman-shooting-says-fired-fatal-shots) with ESPN (http://www.latimes.com/topic/sports/espn-(tv-network)-HOC792.topic) that aired Sunday. Elliott, discussing the incident in the media for the first time, said he has been able to cope with the April 22, 2004, tragedy because of therapy. He said he was speaking out because he wanted to give hope to other soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Elliott said the incident was his first firefight. Months later, he and the others who mistakenly fired at Tillman were demoted out of the elite Rangers unit.

Yeah, there were a bunch of us grunts contemplating the fragging of this cherry
LT out in the bush while he slept in his hooch. Some jerks just deserve it, but
deserving it and having someone actually follow through with it are two
different things.

I didn't mean on purpose. Friendly fire and accidents are far more common than some people might think.

It's your comments followed by a "" that make the least sense. Do yourself a favor. Stop trying to be clever. It's painful to watch.

Had you not responded to it, I would have moved that post into the flame out thread in the Hole since it is totally off topic.

I know, you are right of course, unless we listen to liberals use that tired old talking point that Bush
killed thousands of innocents needlessly.

You will have at least another dozen chances to move an off topic Cigar post to the Hole by 12PM EST tomorrow.

The whole thing is a tragedy. War is a messy, tragic thing.

The platoon leader never should have split up his unit.

Is it me or does 3 to the forehead sound awfully specific for a case of mistaken identity in a crisis situation?

The Ranger had his selector switch on 3 round burst, it would seem.

I remember the conspiracy theories flying around about 3 tight group shots to the head sounded like he was assassinated. My first thought was the 3 round burst.

Happens in all major conflicts. Stonewall Jackson was a casualty of friendly fire. I think the biggest problems occur when the military tries to cover up some of the incidents or someone or some group tries to make it seem like they are conspiracies.

There was no assassination. There was green platoon leader who split his force in enemy territory with too many green Rangers. If it was a less elite unit, the son-of-a-bitch would never have gotten close to hitting Tillman much less a close shot group in the forehead.

I know. I guess I didn't word it right.

Coverups are breeding grounds for such theories.

Haven't thought of Tillman for a long while, but my memory of him is tainted by his having been a EXTREME Chomskyite leftist.

Was he really?

I remember reading a whole slew of stories about that right after he was killed. He wanted to meet and thank Noam Chomsky in person. A bit of a contradiction between his brief career path and the hero of his that despised what he was fighting for.

Hard not to feel for any of our military men and women who lost their lives in combat, but I do not
feel as much for Tillman simply because he was a devotee to the anti American Chumpski. Being a
Chumpskyite is no different than being a full fledged egg-sucking hammer & sickle red-diaper baby commie.
