H. R. Giger, a Swiss painter, sculptor and set designer who mined his own nightmares in creating phantasmagorical works, including the title character — slimy, eyeless and oddly sexual — in the 1979 hit film “Alien,” died on Monday in Zurich. He was 74.
Sandra Mivelaz, administrator of the H. R. Giger Museum (http://www.hrgigermuseum.com/) in Gruyères, Switzerland, said he died of injuries suffered in a fall.
Mr. Giger (pronounced GHEE-ger) was part of the team that won an Academy Award for visual effects in “Alien.” He personally designed the title character through all stages of its life, from egg to eight-foot-tall monster.

RIP. One of the greatest true artists of the cinematic era. Terrified millions, I'm sure.

Great as his Alien work was, I first encountered Giger's work as an album cover, and it was the cover of one of the greatest EVER prog rock albums, maybe even THE greatest. An album that meant and still means the world to me, that completely upped the sophistication of my musical tastes in rock like nothing else has ever done. An epic, rich, meaty album that it is simply IMPOSSIBLE to get tired of.

I speak, of course, of the legendary 'Brain Salad Surgery' by Emerson, Lake and Palmer [ELP, for short], which came out in 1973. I discovered it in about 1977/78.

As well as a great album, it also has the distinction of being one of the greatest album covers ever designed.

It opened up from a seam down the middle, to reveal the inside cover:

From that purchase on, I had nothing but the highest respect for H. R. Giger's work.
