Mitt Romney is aiming for a triple primary victory as voters in Wisconsin, Maryland and Washington DC pick a Republican presidential candidate.

The former Massachusetts governor is hoping to knock main rival Rick Santorum out of the race so he can sew up his party's nomination.

Opinion polls suggest Mr Romney is leading in Wisconsin and Maryland.

But Mr Santorum does not seem ready to bow out of the race to become the challenger to President Barack Obama.

Polls opened in all three primaries at 07:00 local time and will close at 20:00 (01:00 GMT Wednesday in Maryland and Washington, 02:00 in Wisconsin).

Mr Santorum is expected to be competitive only in the mid-western state of Wisconsin, where he has concentrated his campaign in recent days.

A total of 42 delegates are at stake in Wisconsin's winner-take-all primary, with 37 up for grabs in the eastern state of Maryland and 16 in Washington DC - where Mr Santorum is not even on the ballot.

Another primary with out Santorum even on the ballot. Any chance of him stepping out of the race tomorrow morning or is he going to keep running up until the convention?

It is amazing to watch. They're eating their young.

I guess when all the Super Pac money is gone, the 'also rans' will stop handing the Dems. ammunition for the late stages of Obama's victory.

There's a big split in the GOP because hard-core Christians do not want a Mormon representing them; it goes against their faith. That's why Santorum won't bow out - Christian conservatives are his base.

Do you think we'd see this late a 'contest', if not for Citizens United?

As long as the money doesn't run out...Newt will be at book signings.

It's coming close to the end now, but there was so much money flying around. They don't realize that they're harming their own cause.

I definitely think Super Pacs and the whole Citizens United has had an effect in providing the funds to keep things rolling, but I also think Santorum is still a serious contender as long as the GOP is divided along lines of faith.

Keep in mind how long Hillary hung in there, and that was before Citizens United.

Newt will NEVER go away. LOL

I don't think he will try to push it there now with Jeb Bush endorsing Romney now. Which he thought Florida would realign those delegates. So he knows that is not going to happen. Then there was Arizona his other strategy for such. Then Johnny Quest McCain went on a spree and endorsing him. Once Romney really jumps up then I think he will bow out.

I hope it goes to convention, I can't see any of these cons aside from Paul doing anything but the same shit we have now.

It's a pathetic race with pathetic candidates. To consider Sanitarium as a valid contender shows how degraded the GOP has become. Romney is boring but rational and wasn't a half bad Governor but Santorum, PA couldn't get rid of his religiously radical ass fast enough.

Had an interesting conversation with a Canadian friend today. He wondered how long the U.S. can go on with leadership like this, starting with Bush and then Obama, and now yet another election of two very bad choices, a repeat of 2008.

Good question I think.

Yes, this is the best the GOP has to offer. It's great news for Obama. In fact, these candidates stink so bad that it's actually great news for any third-party candidates who decide to enter the fray. I can't wait to watch whichever one of these losers is going to debate Obama. Must-see TV. :)

Yes.....its also great that the DNC put Party first rather than sending someone up to Challenge Obama. Shows you Automatically that the Country is not what they are about! That with them Country is Last.

Been telling people for years.....these aren't the Democrats all once knew.

They have forgotten about ask not what your country can do for you.....but what you can do for your country.

Instead they sold out!

If it makes it to the Convention, and Santorium is out. We will see if Gig-n-Rich will endorse Romney like he said he would. Otherwise what good can Paul Do at the Convention if Romney is already the Nominee. He can't play king-maker then.

The Dems seem to have a plan that is coming into its own, making voters dependent on government and afraid to vote for candidates who might see liberty as more important than dependency.

Really? The ruined economy, housing crash, job evaporation - all a 'plan' to get people to support the party that believes in helping people in need?

Yes, that's a talking point from the GOP. Absurd, but people actually believe it.

That belief is why the GOP won't win the WH in 2012. Too many people want decency rather than callousness right now.

Correct Alias.....jobs not more governmental assitance or hand outs. Nor those from the left that keep preying on them by distracting them by false truths and taking what little money they have. Again No one on the left can even stand for the Democrats with the likes of Chicago, NY, and L.A. As the economic indicators of those Keynesian economics has proved those City Governments to be failures. For at least the bare minimum of 50 years. Thats half a century and they keep wanting more time to try and get it right. But never can. Do to a failed model from the get go.
