eBay Warns Customers to Change Passwords After Database Hacked

Personal information for all of eBay’s 145 million active buyers could have been accessed in a hack two months ago, a company spokeswoman said, as the online auction giant advised all users to change their passwords Wednesday.

The database contained encrypted passwords and was compromised from late February into March.

The hacked database contained customer information including names, phone numbers, birth dates, home addresses and email addresses.

It did not include financial information, the online auction site said.

The company has not yet said how many accounts were breached, but personal information for all eBay users in the database was potentially compromised, according to eBay spokeswoman Amanda Christine Miller.

Information for PayPal, an eBay subsidiary, is encrypted and maintained separately.

Explain?

Data collector, privacy invader.

I don't use it. I had unauthorized Paypal charges on my credit card (someone in the Ukraine buying hairdresser software with my card) and I contacted Paypal, they refused to do anything about it. A very canned response. My credit card company fixed it for me.

They're hacks, just keep that in mind when you're giving them your credit card number. Some dude in a run-down garage is probably logging it.

I don't deal with PayPal either. They keep sending me emails telling me to update my account or they will delete it. That has been for the last few years.

Same here. I haven't used them in 7 years and I still get notices from either them or someone scamming them. I blocked them a few months ago. If an online outfit doesn't take credit cards they don't get my business.

This hacking garbage is getting tiresome. There doesn't seem to be anything they can't hack. I use 18 to 27 digit passwords, change them up every few months and do everything else I can think of but the outfits responsible for protecting my data aren't.

I think people who do serious hacking should be hanged.

Paypal is a scam outfit.

You need to list the 5 companies that are not scam outfits and the 3 restaurants that are not terrible so we know what to talk about? :)

They do take credit cards and guarantee against fraud - up to a limit, I think.
