New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie gave a full-throated endorsement to Sen. Lamar Alexander's reelection campaign on Friday, warning voters not to do anything "dumb" by sending someone else to Washington.
In town to headline a GOP fundraiser, Christie swooped through Alexander's Memphis campaign office to boost the pragmatic Republican senator in his primary contest against conservative challenger Joe Carr in August.
Carr responded Friday night by blasting Alexander for being "so comfortable associating with someone who is the target of numerous federal investigations," a reference to Christie's bridge closure scandal.
Alexander has occasionally drawn fire from the right for his dalliances with Democrats, particularly over his support for the Senate's comprehensive immigration bill. No stranger to criticisms of his own bipartisan politics, Christie argued that Alexander's brand of conservatism is right for Tennessee.
