No. They use a variety of methods. One is break ins of course, but that apparently accounts for a small portion. They go to gun shows and or use straw buyers. At a gun show they just need to see your ID. No record of it. They just have to ask if you are a felon. That's it.

I could get a fake ID today and meet up with a guy in a parking lot tonight and buy an AR-15...virtually no questions asked.

Gun shows require gun checks according to state laws. As for private sales, if you sell a gun privately to someone who then uses it in a crime, you should be held liable. I have no problem with that. No they don't. At least not across the board. There is no mechanism in place to perform background checks at a gun show. It's "let's see your ID, are you a felon? Here ya go!".

When the Feds make laws, often they are crap. They respond to some whiners and make laws that all of us endure.

My first time to have a background check was in California. When was that?
Year was 1982 I believe.

When I purchased from a gun dealer a brand new Ruger .357 pistol. I was forced to wait 2 weeks so I could pick up the pistol.

Then guess what?

Some frigging thief stole it from me and had no background check.

I never replaced that fine Ruger.
