Arizona has just passed a bill that defines gestational age as "calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period of the pregnant woman," which would move the beginning of a pregnancy up two weeks prior to conception.

What's the purpose of the new calculation?

And what is the significance of the 18th week?

And what is the significance of the 18th week?

The new designation of two weeks prior to conception is to shrink the window for legal abortion. That's my understanding from what I just finished reading in the news.

Some of you might want to get an idea of what someone looks like at 18 weeks.

At least before they are murdered.

They want to bully women into doing what they have decided is best for them....how typical.

No, I don't think a lot of them do know there's actually a real person in there by 18 weeks. Don't draw conclusions about the general level of knowledge out there from your own level. There's a lot of ignorance out there. Why do you think that after many decades of the ready availability of contraceptives, there has still been some 50 million abortions?

Before you get on your high horse and accuse me of making war on women, please note that I do not support a government ban on abortions. However, knowing just how ignorant most of the public is in this matter, I do support efforts to fully educate people as to the realities of abortion and just what is being aborted. If they chose to do so anyway, so be it. Government cannot legislate morality any more than they can control drug use, as we've seen. When a population decides that something is OK, the government is not going to change their minds by force.

Yeah women are stupid...they have no idea what's going on. They don't want to have a child for whatever reasons and it's none of your business.

For someone who posts all day about liberty you're strange.

Well, gollee, we have you liberals running around demanding sex education for younger and younger children because you claim they are ignorant about it. Here I am agreeing with you and you don't like that either.

Make up your mind, genius.

It's none of your business....women have the right to choose. All the right wing blather about birth control is BS and it will come back at you. Get the hell off women's bodies you perv.

I don't think there was any question in my mind that when I sat down (like, a half-dozen times over this weekend) to write my Blog Against Theocracy entry this year, I'd be writing about the fake War on Religion vs. the very real War on Women that has been raging across the political spectrum lately; my only problem has been--where to begin?

The thing of it is, I wrote about the theocrats' attacks on reproductive freedom and particularly the pious frauds against Planned Parenthood (http://vixenstrangelymakesuncommonsense.blogspot.com/2011/04/pious-frauds-not-intended-to-be-factual.html) last year--if anything, the pious frauds sitting in Congress did us one better at being theocratically-inclined recently, by holding a panel on women's health care that included not one woman, nor one doctor, but a panel of religious clerics (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/guest-voices/post/womens-religious-freedom-violated-photo-of-all-male-birth-control-witnesses-tells-the-viral-truth/2012/02/16/gIQAeyykIR_blog.html). Because nobody knows the trouble wombs have seen like a bunch of men taking cues from the B-I-B-L-E instead of Grey's Anatomy (http://www.bartleby.com/107/), let alone Our Bodies, Ourselves (http://www.ourbodiesourselves.org/).

If anything, these hyper-religious schmucks have been too much with us, late and soon. They werebehind the Komen for the Cure debacle (http://vixenstrangelymakesuncommonsense.blogspot.com/2012/02/your-pink-ribbon-swag-wont-get-you-into.html), with the fundamentally pro-life Karen Handel's decision to privilege the conscience of pro-lifer donors over the needs of low-income women who relied on Planned Parenthood for early-detection screenings for breast health. They've been behind the disgustingly intimate and invasive trans-vaginal ultrasound bills (http://vixenstrangelymakesuncommonsense.blogspot.com/2012/02/transvaginal-ultrasounds-and-making-it.html), as well as the arbitrary and unscientific heartbeat and fetal pain bills. Time and again, religious leanings have tried or even trumped facts and reason where women's health has been concerned.

This naturally alarms me to no end. There's an axiom that goes, "My fist's rights end where your nose begins". Well, why should anyone suppose that they have rights for their fist or face or any other interest that intersects my uterus?

I say: "No" to all of that. "No" to your concern--"No" to your god that dictates your concern. "No" on behalf of any other woman or female-bodied person who needs someone to say "No" for them. No woman is obliged to believe in ensoulment at conception. No woman should be bullied and made to feel ashamed for her fertility. No woman should be called a "slut" because she is a human female-bodied person who engages in intercourse. My stand against theocracy is to state the "No" for any woman who ever needs it said. NO. Our bodies belong to us. We are our bodies plus the will that says "yes or no"--and so many of us say "No". The government has no dominion--and a theocratic one still less. "No--we will choose when to have our children". "No--we will decide how they are taught." "No--those lessons need not have religion guiding them."

Religion--any religion, has no right over my life or my body that I did not give it. For that reason, I want it to be separate from my government. For all time.

If Barry Goldwater ("Mr. Conservative") knew what these lunatics have done to his home state and the GOP, he would turn over in his grave.
http://www.liberalslikechrist.org/about/Goldwater.html
Yes he would...he warned against bringing the wacko religious right into the party but NO....any means necessary to win...they got what they deserved but it's playing havoc with our country.

The so-called "religious right" composed of Christian fundamentalists (evangelical fanatics) and extremists, have hijacked the Republican party. They are not Christians, but the worst kind of political subversives. They are unethical and intellectually dishonest, their professed beliefs a perversion of Christ’s teachings, and their practices a corruption of the most basic tenets of Christian faith. They are, in short, pious frauds; they are anathema. It is they - not the Muslim terrorists - that pose the greatest threat to American democracy. They will be their own undoing; for it is they who have pushed the Republicans far from their traditional conservative values in order to impose their own radical agenda on the nation and the world. They shall succeed only in alienating true conservatives and causing a rift in the Republican party; which, ultimately, shall result in their political downfall.
I couldn't agree more!!!
