I've found unfired handgun shells placed in window sills and sidewalk flowerpots in the Quarter. It's a sign a gang controls the turf or that there is going to be a shooting nearby... by a gangster.
The Quarter has many facets... foreign tourists, and visiting U.S. folk from all around the nation rarely see the ugly side of this city and it's "Boyz".

When I was in Cairo in 1988 we toured the Pyramids (stationed in the Sinai). The first part of the trip was a camel ride around the complex. I said, fuck the camel give me a horse (it was an option). Some Arab on a camel said that he could take a pic of me with the Pyramids in the back ground. So I gave him my camera (an expensive Canon - for the day). He took the pic and got his camel close to me and said that I had to give him $10 dollars for my camera back. I told him that trick works with the Japanese tourists but not me. He took off into the desert and I easily chased his ass down- horse loved it. This wasn't some American trial horse. He wanted to run and did what I wanted him to do.

Grabbed my camera and yanked it from his hands. Then our group went into the Pyramids. (We had body guards with us). Anyway I still have that pic. I need to scan it and post it. My scanner is a document scanner, I don't know what it would do to an old 3x5.
