Forty years after its initial publication, a study called The Limits to Growth is looking depressingly prescient (http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/Looking-Back-on-the-Limits-of-Growth.html#). Commissioned by an international think tank called the Club of Rome, the 1972 report found that if civilization continued on its path toward increasing consumption, the global economy would collapse by 2030. Population losses would ensue, and things would generally fall apart.

The study was — and remains — nothing if not controversial, with economists doubting its predictions and decrying the notion of imposing limits on economic growth. Australian researcher Graham Turner (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CC4QFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.themonthly.com.au%2Fgraham-turner&ei=idJ9T9zsMISA2gXx8oyBDQ&usg=AFQjCNFW0MNFZwsZFsyCPEQ7lPfvIRSfsA) has examined its assumptions in great detail during the past several years, and apparently his latest research falls in line with the report’s predictions, according to Smithsonian Magazine. The world is on track for disaster, the magazine says.....snip~

Course most of the economists doubt this. Yet the EU keeps sticking it right back in their face.....don't they. Pete's prediction on the EU may well be accurate. Think these guys at MIT are anywheres close in their prediction.

If we keep going on the course we're on currently, I can definitely see this happening.

Normally I wouldn't put stock in any economic predictions so far from now but what other event will put a stop to the reckless spending? It's certainly not going to be a responsible federal government that slows this runaway train.

Plus we can see the only limit they want to set....is no limit! I can't Drive 55!

Currencies have collapsed before. They will do so again. It isn't the end of the world.

Yeah.....I don't think they were saying it would be the end of the World. Just that the World Economy will collapse.

It seems like things would get pretty crazy if that happened. What do you all think would happen? We'd revert a barter system but there would be civil unrest all over the country. Either our government would be overthrown or the rebellion would be violently crushed if it failed.

I don't have the answer.....but I am sure on the local level people would barter. Course some places in the US are already using other forms of Currency. Like the Berkshire Dollar. Plus I think they have something like that going on in Michigan too.

I don't know, their are always predictions of the eminent fall of man. The Bible foretells Armageddon, Nostradamus the King of Terror, Hubbert peak oil, alarmists global, er, climate change. The sky is always falling.

If you follow MMC's link to the chart looks like a revised peak oil prediction.

I can see an economic Peter predicts, though I refer to it as bursting the government bubble.

But man will go on, man is resourceful and innovative.
