Notwithstanding your unfortunate smiley, and trite remarks, they did change sides. The Democrats which had historically been associated with conservative politics, became associated with liberal politics after 1963.

Well, it was much earlier than that. Probably starting with the post civil war reconstruction that had the republicans favoring a bigger government. But only for creating the infrastructure for bigger businesses later on. With western expansion late 1800's came discontent from the settlers. This drove the democrats into the big government field by promising them social programs. This was also the same time that the republicans were shifting to a hands off government. Since they got what they wanted out of having a big government.
So, it pretty much began around the 1860's and ended around the 1930's.

But, I'm sure there was potato salad.

I think it was more of an industrialist north vs non industrialized south dynamic, the north being solidly Republican, big business oriented, but socially more classically liberal and progressive and the south solidly Democratic social conservatives but, more modernly liberal however the party of the little guy, basically agrarian, small business in their outlook, but not progressive. Outside of the south, the Democrats were the party of the unionists and minorities. Post 1963 the Democrats changed their social position and began to embrace socially progressive policies which have evermore linked them to liberalism. Meh, I think both parties have been all over the map and still are to a degree. The Republicans are still the party of big business, but have now become the social cons, whereas the Democrats continue to support smaller business, wage earners and push progressive ideology. At least on the surface. Pass the coleslaw.
