View Full Version : Worst video games ever?

There are like a bazillion games out there, a small fraction are great. Most are mediocre but some are really bad.

Really bad.

What's the worst you've ever seen?

The first one that comes to mine was Hillsfar for the original NES. Role playing games were fairly popular with that system and there were a few good AD&D games out and I saw this one and bought it. What a piece of shit. All I remember was riding a horse around tripping over logs and breaking keys trying to unlock doors.

I returned it - back when you could return games.

I only played D&D and AD&D old school. Pre- internet.

I can't think of any off the top of my head. I'll give it more thought when I get home. But my main gaming experience has been MMOs, and I haven't played a bad one yet.

Hmmm...Shaq Fu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaq_Fu) for the Super NES and Sega Genesis has to be among the worst video games I've ever seen. I'll have mercy and let Wikipedia describe the plot for you: "Shaquille O'Neal wanders into a dojo while heading to a heavily emphasized charity basketball game in Tokyo, Japan. After speaking with a martial arts master, he stumbles into another dimension, where he must rescue a young boy named Nezu from the evil mummy Sett Ra." ...Enough said.:laugh:

Let's see, what other really, really bad games can I think of? Hmm....oh yes, Custer's Revenge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Custer%27s_Revenge) for the Atari 2600! You play as the famous General Custer. Your objective is to rape a Native American woman tied to a pole. ...Yeah.

Oh yeah, there was a PC game that came out some time ago called Super Columbine Massacre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Columbine_Massacre_RPG!), and, with minimal embellishment, it's exactly what it sounds like: You play as the shooters. Your objective is to kill as many Columbine High School students and teachers as possible. This qualifies as the the most disgusting RPG ever made by a mile.

Still another that comes to mind is the PC first-person shooter Ethnic Cleansing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_Cleansing_%28video_game%29). You guessed it: You go around shooting up crude stereotypes of various minority groups. (The only redeeming quality to this game is that it's production values are so low that you'll miss your targets half the time.)

I remember I received a Smurfs video game for Colecovision back in the 1980s and it just was NOT challenging AT ALL.....

You were expecting to be challenged by a Smurfs video game?

What the hell is colecovision?

Those sound more tasteless than functionally bad in terms of gameplay.

Holy shit. I had no idea any of these existed.

That's a big part of how I measure a game's badness. Bebe's Kid's, Magic Boy, and all Barbie video games are probably tied for the worst games ever in terms of production values. But see, unless you frequent game review sites, you have to actually play a game to discover that it's got poor production values, which implies that you were able to get past the game's box cover in order to buy or rent it. When it comes to an epically offensive game, I won't get that far. It will stay on the store shelf (or download page, as applicable).

Oh you'd be surprised. I could've quite easily extended that into a top 15 list really. Most of the really appalling games are computer exclusives. That's the most consistent pattern. I think the Atari 2600 came in second place for those.

Daikatana. Dear Lord, but the computer controlled sidekicks made the game unplayable.

IMPress Polly - did you actually buy and play these games?

Nope. The OP asks what the worst games are that we've "ever seen". I went on that basis. I've read reviews and seen game play footage from the aforementioned titles. I did rent Shaq Fu back in the day though.

I think the worst game I actually own is Dragon Ball Z Sagas for the Game Cube. The only thing good about that game are the cut scenes, which are ripped straight from the TV show. The rest of the game is an annoyingly repetitive beat 'em up where you confront the same few enemies over and over and over and over again to complete the levels. The controls respond with a delay. The graphics are so bad that the game looks like it's PS1 or N64 title even though it's for Game Cube. And though DBZ isn't known for its memorable soundtrack, the developers would've done better to just port the soundtrack straight from the show because their original tracks have no rhythm and no feel whatsoever. The only reason I keep the game around is because it reveals a host of character power levels that aren't divulged in the show, so it serves as a certain reference point for yours truly in that regard.

I didn't think so but I was curious, they didn't sound like games in your genre.

I have no genre per se, but I know what you meant and you're right: that sorta thing isn't my style. It's not many people's style either. All those games got terrible reviews.

EDIT:

Hey, as something maybe worth noting (or not), they did a list of the worst games of all time on PBS Game/Show earlier this year too. Here's what their list looked like:

Ugh.

I'm still waiting for a truly great DBZ game. The only ones I really enjoy are DBZ chou saiya densetsu,(Japanese only) Budokai 3, Attack of the Sayians, and LOG 2. But those games aren't recent.

Neither is DBZ. Those are all good games!

lol, that one is LEGENDARY for its lameness! It even appears on Wikipedia's compiled list of worst games ever, as determined by the aggregate of critical reviews. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_notable_for_negative_reception )

It's true that DBZ isn't recent, but they still crank out games every year, so it'd be nice if a few didn't suck.

An Attack of the Sayians style sequel would be cool.

And yes, Superman 64 was unplayable crap. I remember my dad renting it for me, and when I started playing, I was dumbfounded at how shit that game was. It's insulting that a developer would even put that on the market.
