I know defense spending isn't popular these days.. but if your gonna spend building one of these is a good place to do it... no politics on this, just the joy of seeing awesome toys . currently it's on scheduel for completion around 2014-15 I think.

The lead ship will be named Zumwalt for Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, and carries the hull number DDG-1000. Originally 32 ships were planned, but this was progressively cut down[11] to three. The Navy expects each ship to cost nearly $3.8 billion. Including research and development, the cost grows to $7 billion apiece.

But hey, with the cost of roughly the earning of the battleship film, you can build a real one

 That's actually a good idea for them to get funding. Lots of people would pay money to see a documentary on the creation of this ship. It'd probably be better than Transformers 3.

As someone that served on an old US warship before, i just hope that this badass's living courter is half as modern as it's weapons system

Ha, yes I think that's a safe bet. Maybe no extra space but at least the bunk will be modern.

Toilets made for average size adults (and really, i'm pretty sure the average US sailor is bigger than me) instead of children would be nice too... as would a shower that doesn't make 20-30 adult male rubbing each other naked ....

of course, some sort of advanced anti-cockroach / rat techonlogy would be appriciated too  as would a better food storage compartment (though I guess with fewer men need to run the ship most of these problems would automatically become much easier to tackle)

Yeah its not so much the cramped quarters. Or small places. That Big Blue Pond ain't no joke to mess with. Althought they say the Israelis are working on something that would allow man to breathe underwater as we do now with air.

Scientists have done something like that with animals.

To be fair, I served on a ship that was mostly in use during the 1970s in the US, I'm guessing it's not as bad even now, though US warship have never been well known for their comfort at least .. for example Taiwan have the French Lafeyette class stealth frigate and those things are consierablly better in that regard, I lived in a freaking 40 men bunk while those ships have 6 men quoters for all soliders including a TV and bathroom(!!!!)

That's why mental screening is mandatory for sub crew....
