NEW YORK -- The U.S. Secret Service is having preliminary discussions about setting up security screening checkpoints near public areas around the White House, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press Sunday.

The official said the measures have been discussed by the agency previously. But the talks have taken on added urgency following an incident Friday in which a man carrying a knife jumped over a gate around the White House and made it to a building entrance.

The official insisted on anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss internal deliberations by name.

The Secret Service tightened security outside the White House after the embarrassing breach, in which Omar J. Gonzalez, 42, of Copperas Cove, Texas, climbed the fence, ran across the lawn and entered the building before agents stopped him.

They were given the perfect excuse to try something new. They instituted cameras at every intersection (and other places), and Americans did not stop them. They instituted mandatory checkpoints, where police stop you for no reason and require that you show them your ID, not unlike the checkpoints of Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia, and Americans did not stop them. They have sent cops to stop people just walking down the street, demanding they show their ID, and arresting them when, bewildered, they refuse. Americans did not complain.

Now, they are going to set up "security screening" checkpoints "NEAR public areas AROUND the White House." The era of "papers, please" is here. Will Americans complain this time? Or will we continue to go quietly into open tyranny?

We're at war with the most dangerous enemy that has ever faced mankind in his long climb from the swamp to the stars, and it's been said if we lose that war, and in so doing lose this way of freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment that those who had the most to lose did the least to prevent its happening. Well I think it's time we ask ourselves if we still know the freedoms that were intended for us by the Founding Fathers. - Ronald Reagan - A TIME FOR CHOOSING (The Speech – October 27, 1964)

Why is Obama entitled to more security than anyone else in America gets?

Because he's the President? The guy who runs the country? And because our alternative is Joe Biden.

And because our alternative is Joe Biden.

That is a scary thought.

and if Biden goes BOOM! Next in line is the crybaby Speaker of the House.

how about a compromise?

take away obumer and Michelle's vacation money and spend that on more security?

Why bother? The President is the most secure individual in the world. The security breach happened at the White House. Guess who wasn't there when it happened? Obama. Was there a security breach where he was? Nope. Protection.

You're not interested in my compromise, huh?

Not really. It's unnecessary and doesn't really get us anywhere.

It would get us more security for Obama without raising the debt.

Obama's vacations don't do much to add to the debt anyway, the debt would continue to rise even if he didn't take a single vacation.

I assume Der fuhrer through his bodyguards will demand greater security because of these incidents.

whatever form that greater security takes make him pay for it.

The Secret Service has attack dogs. I would like to know why they were not released.
