i would recommend carlo d'este's biography of patton

although it makes good conspiracy fodder, the fact is that patton had already been effectively silenced after he was relieved of command of third army.

there was no need to assassinate him

I read all his books, haven't got that one yet. From what I've read in the past, Patton was a bastard and his men hated him. Might have been an inside job. I will read it to see what light he sheds on the death.

I drove a jeep to that base he was close to. At the time I was not aware of his dying. All i knew was one of my uncles was in Tanks under Patton. (I drove blood there I believe I was told)

In looking back, I wonder to this day, why drive it to Mannheim when we had a Division hospital at Wurzburg, Germany that had labs. Maybe it was a rare type for a patient. In the Army, you get orders to drive this package to a city and you simply drive it there. I picked it up from the medics who said it was blood.

O'Reilly might have a good point.

O'Reilly claims in his interview that Patton's men really liked him.

When I got to Germany, a well known Colonel by the name of William De Puy had just departed as he earned his first star. He reported back to the USA for more senior officer training. De Puy was one hell of a commander. His men adored them. It was so evident when I got to the unit it is my only way to know of him. We had a new Col when I got to Schweinfurt but the men talked and talked so good about De Puy i expected he knew how to walk on water.

Patton was in that mold. Both were intensely aggressive and simply took down the enemy very fast.

De Puy gets almost zero recognition today other than by some Army officers who heard of him.

What we call the Powell Doctrine really is the De Puy Doctrine in my opinion. General Tommy Franks used the DePuy Doctrine to win his two wars.

War as I knew it by General Patton.

I tried to introduce you to a hero you more than likely had never heard of. =William DePuy

Name a General you like to talk about most?

I like Patton a lot. My adopted grandfather served with Patton and was interviewed for a documentary about Patton on the Military History Channel.

As for a general I like to talk about the most...I'd have to go with Robert E. Lee.

I think that Lee was overrated. But perhaps he just had incompetent generals under him (for the most part, some were great).

Robert E. Lee honed defense to a fine art and was extremely interested in keeping down his casualty rates. He was outstanding at knowing the moves of his opponent prior to his opponents attacks.

Patton was not defensive. He was very offensive. To the point he ran out of fuel. He ripped senior Generals for stopping at a river's edge. He ordered crossing the river immediately. He would lead from the front.

Fortunately the north had an abundance of such types of command.

The north didn't see a decent general until Grant. I would not call that lack of generalship fortunate.
