The name change comes after activists pushed for a day to honor indigenous people instead of Christopher Columbus, the most recognizable figure linked to European contact with the Americas.

To be fair, he had no way of knowing there was anything else between Europe and the Indies.

I mean, it's basically like, "Hey, dumbass, you didn't find India, not even close, but fuck it, we didn't realize that place was there either so here, have a 500-year old holiday."

Seriously, those men were intrepid explorers. Those two or three generations of Spaniards, Italians, and Portuguese are a fascinating bunch.

There is something about Hernando de Soto's men holding Mass on the banks of the Mississippi in 1542 that thrills me. I love history.

To be fair, he had no way of knowing there was anything else between Europe and the Indies.

Yet the Scandinavians knew about Iceland, Greenland and N. America centuries before the rest of Europe.

Well, it's like Gustav Whitehead in Connecticut flying two years before the Wright Brothers, but had no filmed documentation. So the Wright Bros. get the credit for flying.

Lief Erikson paddled away not realizing what he found. Columbus stumbled on it, but made the most out of his discovery.

My granddaughter's history book reduced Columbus to one single sentence, Leif Erikson had nothing and Oprah Winfrey had an entire page. That's BS.

Yes, but who's?

Oprah has a place in those books, as do many modern entertainers, but not to the exclusion of other major players in our history. They are rewriting the history books, and manipulating what our kids our learning.

Yes, but who's?

The aristocratic oligarchy that rules us, and of which Oprah is a member.

A more advanced culture could have communicated that to the rest of Europe. Oh well.

Columbus changed the world. The Viking voyages make for interesting documentaries on the History Channel.
