Islamic scholars make the theological case against IS (https://news.vice.com/article/muslim-scholars-make-the-theological-case-against-the-islamic-state)

The media should be reporting this more than they are. The scholars cover a lot of ground.

More than a hundred Muslim scholars and leaders from around the world released an open letter addressed to Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on Wednesday, telling the self-proclaimed caliph, in no uncertain terms, that the group's use of Islamic scripture is illegitimate and perverse.

The document, which was issued in Arabic and English on the website Letter to Baghdadi (http://lettertobaghdadi.com/arabic2.php) and is embedded below, begins with a list of practices employed by the Islamic State (also known as ISIS or ISIL) that its authors say are explicitly forbidden by Islam. They include torture, slavery, forced conversions, the denial of rights for women and children, and the killing of innocents.

The problem is, that just like our earlier problems amongst Catholics and Protestants, or the Old v the New Testament, everyone thinks they're right. The Shia would want to murder every Sunni and visa versa. According to Amnesty International, the Shia militias have been rounding Sunni civilians up in Iraq and killing them in reprisal and the stoning of woman and hanging people from cranes goes on. It's just a bloodbath with either sect.

Kind of spooky. The Japanese had a delegation talking peace in DC when the attack on Pearl Harbor began.

Sounds like a good reason to not get involved....

Refugee - what was that you were saying about there being a law or something in Islam against Muslims criticizing Islam?

They're not criticizing Islam, they're criticizing the self-proclaimed caliph.

More than one hundred scholars and leaders of Islam? I remember when hundreds of German scholars and leaders spoke out about Nazis too. Not enough of them either.

Note that they're speaking out about the abuses of the Sunni's. Nothing about the human rights abuses in Iraq under the Shia's.

I believe it is a direct response to IS statements about Islam. It is a good thing- it will dampen the recruiting effort.
