* WHO warns that Ebola coming closer to Ivory Coast
GENEVA, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The death toll from the Ebola epidemic rose to 4,922 out of 10,141 known cases in eight countries through Oct. 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday.
The virus, which reached Mali through a two-year-old girl who died on Friday, now threatens Ivory Coast, having infected people virtually all along its borders with Guinea and Liberia.
Ivory Coast is the world's biggest cocoa producer. The Ebola outbreak has hurt the economic growth that has been raising living standards in the region.
The three worst-hit countries of West Africa -- Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone -- account for the bulk of the world's worst Ebola outbreak, recording 4,912 deaths out of 10,114 cases, the WHO said in its update.
The overall figures include outbreaks in Nigeria and Senegal, deemed by the WHO to be now over, as well as isolated cases in Spain, the United States and a single case in Mali.
But the true toll may be three times as much: by a factor of 1.5 in Guinea, 2 in Sierra Leone and 2.5 in Liberia, while the death rate is thought to be about 70 percent of all cases.
The WHO has said that many families are keeping infected people at home rather than putting them into isolation in treatment centers, some of which have refused patients due to a lack of beds and basic supplies.

I read a prediction of 10,000,000 before its over. If you read the rest of the article that I didnt post it says one of the problems is families keeping infected people home instead of bringing them to quarantine areas, which spreads it like wildfire.

Because it gets ratings. Ebola is something that should be paid attention to sure, but far more people die every day from things that are much more controllable but yet it's not the top story.

I'm going to pretend for a second that you're legit...
It's a top news story because it's dramatic and fear sells (clearly). An epidemic is defined as a rapid spread of disease to a large number of persons. Has Ebola spread to a large number of persons rapidly in the US? Have many Americans died?
It is an epidemic, in fact a pandemic in Western Africa. But as of yet, not in the US or anywhere else.
Maybe you shouldn't watch so much news.

The sniffles don't kill. Ebola causes so much bleeding form the anus that you die from so much anal blood loss. The CDC is not taking this issue seriously enough and acting like butt bleeding is normal.

The flu is not the "sniffles". The flu amongst children and the elderly can be deadly, and more people have died in this country from complications stemming from the flu than ebola.

Fine you can hug all the butt bleeders that you want. Chicken soup cures the flu but it won't cure you from the Ebola epidemic. Ebola has literally killed thousands of people.

Chicken soup does not cure the flu, and yes it has killed thousands worldwide, but how many people have died from malaria? cholera? influenza? tuberculosis? starvation? AIDS? child birth? More people die of dysentery worldwide than ebola.

To quote that great observer of American life, Capt Obvious:
'More Americans have married Kim Kardashian... ... than have contracted ebola in the US'
According to an article on Yahoo on the data collected so far on Ebola victims, people over 45 have a higher fidelity rate. 33% of patients with less than 100,000 copies of the virus per milliliter of blood at diagnosis will die. 94% of patients who have more than 10 million copies of the virus will die. Plenty of IV fluids is key to treatment for survival.
The typical symptoms are fever, headache, weakness, dizziness, diarrhea and vomiting. Coughing and sneezing are not symptoms of this strain of Ebola. This is why they are not considering this strain to be airborne.
This of course has not stopped the irrational fear and panic of the public or government officials activities of how they are handling this with protocols that do not warrant the facts of this strain.
The Human factor does not trust the facts since the facts may not be true in the first place which is creating an environment of schools closing, business's closing, etc for a very simple reason, it is better to be safe then sorry. Lawsuits is another fear factor if anyone gets Ebola from a bowling alley in the case of Dr Spencer who had not quarantine himself will put the owner out of business. Even if no one gets Ebola from the bowling alley, many people will not go bowling there.
It is better to quarantine people so that others in our society doesn't have to lose their business because they were unfortunate to have a Ebola customer walk through their doors. Schools don't have to close because they simply will not gamble on any student exposed to Ebola or their relatives of risking transmission to other students. There would be massive lawsuits and schools simply cannot afford to fight them.

:biglaugh:
You are right the flu virus doesn't kill, it is the bacterial that invades the system because the immune system has its defenses down that can cause death to those that have the flu.

The CDC knows full well that the actual flu virus is not what causes the death with people that have the flu. Please do some research on deaths related to the flu.

And it's not the fall from the building that actually causes death, it's the sudden stop at the end.
