Mary Burke supports sticking with Common Core in Wisconsin Schools

MADISON (WKOW) -- Gov. Scott Walker's Democratic challenger says she doesn't agree with the governor's call for change in education standards.
Earlier this week, Gov. Walker issued a statement asking the state Legislature to pass a bill next year repealing the Common Core educational standards and replace the policy with standards "set by people in Wisconsin."
"As Governor, I want to prioritize education," Burke says. "Common Core is needed to raise Wisconsin education standards. What you see is Walker putting politics ahead of education."

Ok Wisconsinites do you believe you know better what your children should be learning in school or do you believe a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capitol can plan your children's education better than you can plan it for yourselves? Mary Burke apparently thinks you can't. That should be one of the top questions of the upcoming election.

MADISON (WITI) — In the race for governor, Democratic candidate Mary Burke has been touting her experience as a Trek Bicycle executive. Trek Bicycle is a world-famous bike company that was founded in Waterloo, Wisconsin in 1976. FOX6 is taking a closer look at Trek’s track record on taxes.
Now, FOX6 News is looking at Mary Burke’s position on corporate taxes — and her association with Trek Bicycle, which she touts in virtually every campaign ad and during every public appearance she makes.
“I’m Mary Burke, and helping to turn my family’s business into a global company has been a big part of my life. As a business executive at Trek Bicycle, I have actual experience creating jobs,” Mary Burke says in a gubernatorial campaign ad.
“Today, 930 people work at Trek — the great Wisconsin company she helped build,” another one of Burke’s campaign ads says — even using the Trek logo.
Burke, a Democratic candidate for governor has staked her campaign on her experience as a Trek Bicycle executive.
But Burke’s campaign doesn’t want to talk about the company’s record on taxes.
Records from the Wisconsin Department of Revenue obtained by FOX6 News show that Trek Bicycle has not paid net income taxes for more than three decades — at least as far back as 1982.
Gov. Walker has advocated tax breaks for businesses — something Burke has criticized.

Burke criticizes tax breaks for businesses, yet apparently her families company Trek Bicycles hasn't paid net income taxes since 1982. But, surely Trek Bicycles makes all their bike in the U.S.A, any liberal Democrat would and should expect that from one of their pro union candidates for Governor right?

Scott Walker says Trek makes 99% of its bicycles overseas

Walkers’ ad says that Trek Bicycle "makes 99% of their bikes overseas," and it puts Mary Burke at the center of responsibility by saying Trek is "Burke’s company."
The best available numbers, from Trek’s own mouth, lend credence to the 99 percent claim, as do the best educated guesses by industry analysts. So the ad’s main thrust is correct.
Calling Trek "Burke’s company" is somewhat problematic, though. She held a management position there and still owns stock, but she left a decade ago and seven years before the 2011 story that yielded the 99 percent figure.
On balance, we rate the claim Mostly True.

What's in a number 99% or 90%, the truth is the vast majority bicycles made for her families bicycle business are make in.........wait for it........China.

"Burke can't on the one hand take credit for much of Trek's business success, but then somehow sell the notion that there was a firewall between her and Trek outsourcing thousands of American bike manufacturing jobs." The Democrats pounded Romney for doing the same kinds of things. We'll see next week if what wasn't acceptable for Romney magically becomes acceptable for Mary Burke in Wisconsin.
