WASHINGTON — A Senate committee has approved legislation to give benefits to same-sex partners of federal workers. The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee sent the legislation to the full Senate on Wednesday. The Senate has failed to pass previous versions of the bill.

While the committee acted just weeks after President Barack Obama announced his support for gay marriage, the legislation is focused only on equalizing benefits for same-sex partners of federal employees.

To qualify, both domestic partners must file an affidavit stating the individuals are in a committed domestic partnership and intend to remain in that relationship indefinitely.....snip~

Lieberman cited a Congressional Budget Office report estimating the bill would cost the government an average of $70 million a year and compared that to the $400 billion paid out in total federal compensation each year to show the costs are relatively small. He also emphasized the bill would make same-sex domestic partners of federal employees subject to the anti-nepotism rules and financial disclosure requirements that apply to married couples are.

Ranking member Susan Collins, R-Maine, said the bill, which she also co-sponsored, would make the federal service more appealing to young people, even those who would not need or qualify for the benefits. “They look at the presence of this benefit as the sign of the employer being a good employer,” Collins said.

No changes to the measure were proposed, though Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., asked to be recorded as a “no” vote, and three committee members expressed their opposition by proxy: Sens. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.; Ron Johnson, R-Wis.; and Jerry Moran, R-Kan.....snip~

Why Would Collins be concerned to make this more appealing to young people?

To increase the applicant pool I would think...they'll make better hires that way.

The point was.....she is Republican and was infact Co-Sponsoring the bill. Specifically for Federal Employees. Do you think they can say they will remain in the relationship indefinately?

This won't make a significant difference in their applicant pool. This is just to make their gesture seem less political.

Again, I don't think they can say they will be involved in the relationship indefinately. Hell even Married people can't do that.

Whats Interesting about it Trinnity?

There goes the system...it'll be like that movie with Adam sanders and the chunky guy pretending to be homos to get bennies...every Tom, Dick (ha) and Harry will be doing this. Thanks Obama, you are such a nice guy as to ruin our economy and now our morals too.
