My 42 year old Goddaughter has stage 4 breast cancer, she has about 6 months. Her mom contacted me asking if I knew of any agencies that help terminal cancer patients with financial assistance. I have no idea. Does anyone know of any help available for these families? She lives on Long Island in New York.

I'm not familiar with that area or what is available there. I do know that if they need help with the drugs, they can contact the pharm company and they will sometimes provide the necessary chemo at reduced or free. The problem is that it takes several months to get the help. We went through that with my fil...and by the time the pharm company got back to him, he had finished the treatments (we paid for it out of pocket). This was when Medicare did not pay for chemo. Hopefully, they are faster now.

I did find this: http://ww5.komen.org/BreastCancer/FinancialResources.html

Prayers for your Goddaughter & her family...and you

Thank you PolWatch I've been searching the Internet for agencies, but for particulars you need to put in specific info. She has had cancer for almost 4 years, she maxed out her insurance. Her hubby is ill, with heart disease and they have 2 kids, 14 and 16. It's a sad situation, that unfortunately, many people are faced with. I hate that word cancer. Her mom is my dear friend that I told you about. She's like a sister to me.

I gave the info you sent to my friend. She was very thankful. There were a couple of places she will call and see what they can do. Thank you for responding, your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

My mother has gone in and out of remission for breast and bone cancer. She is on Medicare.

Have you looked into Medicaid? You can sign up online easily. Find her state's webpage.

I did it for my brother two weeks ago.

I found this: http://www.cancercare.org/financial

Not sure if that will help since she'd need to be below the poverty line. When a close family member had cancer the community raised some money for transportation costs. We didn't need it so we ended up donating it to a hospital. Maybe something like that could get started?
