Over the past few weeks, there has been growing optimism in western capitals that Iran might be forced into a compromise over its nuclear programme and avoid a war with Israel and the US.
However, after two days of anguished talks this week between Iran and world powers in Baghdad (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/cee9c2ae-a5c0-11e1-a3b4-00144feabdc0.html), such hopes were doused in a very cold dose of reality.
As Israel and the US make contingency plans for a possible strike, the six powers – the US, EU, UK, France, Germany, Russia and China – put a proposal to Iran that would have seen Tehran freeze its production of more highly enriched uranium in return for a package of inducements from the US and EU, such as providing parts for Iranian civil aircraft.
But after often fraught bargaining in Baghdad, diplomats left declaring they had made no progress at all.

It's not good, but we need to start making plans for what to do when our enemies possess this technology. Truthfully we should have been preparing for that day for a long time. Even the USSR got nukes before we thought they would, Pakistan was a real eye-opener. We need a longer term focus in our foreign policy and some much better border and airspace defense (rather than throwing money away in Afghanistan).

And if the UN gets us to go along with the outer space code of conduct treaty (http://thepoliticalforums.com/threads/3433-Five-Harmful-UN-Treaties-Obama-will-try-to-Ratify), it will be all the harder to have weapons in space to protect ourselves. It's not about litter, it's about defensive weapons in space. We need that.
