Basically, the Baltimore Police, as well as several other states and jurisdictions have the ability to create their own cell phone towers that force any phones within a certain radius to connect through them. When connected, it allows the police access to your contacts, texts, phone calls, apps, location, etc. All of this is done without your knowledge, and can be used against you. My thinking is that the whole program is unconstitutional, as it violates the 4th amendment. Thoughts?

Note: they cannot focus on a single cell phone with these things, it captures the information from every cell phone within it's radius.

And when people spoke of these towers going up they were "tin foil hatters", if anyone recalls.

Just an observation.

if ya think that is bad, check this out:

'WASHINGTON — The Justice Department is collecting data from thousands of cellphones through high-tech gear deployed on airplanes that mimics communications towers, The Wall Street Journal reported (http://online.wsj.com/articles/americans-cellphones-targeted-in-secret-u-s-spy-program-1415917533?mod=WSJ_hp_LEFTTopStories) Thursday.'

'Citing sources familiar with the operations, the newspaper said the U.S. Marshal’s Service program, which became fully operational in 2007, operates Cessna aircraft from at least five metropolitan-area airports to collect the data. The airports were not identified in the Journal story.'

And then there's so-called “parallel construction" (aka lying) where police conceal an illegal chain of evidence by fabricating a legal one.

Why, yes, yes it is overreach. I expect all the pro-cop "constitutional conservatives" to come in and find a way to justify this, though.

I imagine it will have something to do with police nudity and wads of saliva-soaked paper.

We allow the police to police themselves, and give the feds secret courts, and then wonder why the average citizen always looses?

I think it will be found to be unconstitutional and most assuredly should be. We will all be carrying "papers" by dint of having a cell phone. As a true conservative I am vehemently opposed to this.

I remember when" Balmer" was a nice place to live and not an extension of the Warsaw Ghetto.

Alright first of all I agree with you that they can't do this legally. But I do take offense to the pro-cop comment, not because you may think I am which I am not, but because it really sounds stupid. There is nothing wrong with supporting your police. I could easily say that I expect all the people that do not care about the truth and fairness should shut up because they are wrong. But I do not, I let them blabber until the courts prove it to them.

The Inner Harbor area has attracted a lot of yuppies in the past decade or so, and has become a nice spot, the rest of the city is flat out dangerous.

The bad part about the yuppies buying up areas like Fells Point though, is that the hood rats have been moving out into the surrounding counties and bringing the crime with them. (Not a race issue, a morals one)

Don't know how old you are but I lived in Baltimore from 1963 to 1977. My ex inlaws owned a bakery on Patapso Ave. At that time the Inner Harbor was still undeveloped and only junkies and prostitutes frequented the area. However, McCorrmicks factory was there and boy did it smell good when they were cooking up apple pie spices!! In those days I wasn't afraid to go anywhere in the city except Cherry Hill. Even the fire department wouldn't go in there without a police escort. I am not sure I would wander around at night any more.

I remember when Federal Hill was selling "dollar houses". You could buy a house for a dollar but were obligated to invest at least $40,000.00 in the house or it would revert back. At that time I bought a house on Wasena Ave between Church and Patapso for $9,990.00 so you can see $40,000.00 was a lot of money. By the way I sold that house 3 years later for $18,000.00 and moved to Severna Park.

I was born in 1977, so I don't have those nice memories of the city. The harbor has developed pretty nice, but the rest of the city is not safe by any means. Cherry Hill is still the same... maybe even worse. They recently built these real nice townhomes there, but I have no idea who would buy them. It is like 30 brand new townhouses sitting by themselves right in the middle of the ghetto.

McCormick has been threatening to move its operations to PA, but since the election I haven't heard anymore on that. I love when I go up I83 and get overwhelmed with the spice smells

BTW, my late sister in law was dating a Baltimore City cop in the early 70's when they went out on strike. He told me once that as a policeman he could arrest anyone for any reason at all and it would be up to the arrested person to get out of jail. He could arrest me with or without a warrant and then I would at the very least spend a night or two in jail until I saw a judge. So the cops have always wield more power than we would like them too and probably always will.

I think most police see the world in terms of black or white with no shades of gray. Things are either right or wrong to them and if wrong they want to make them right. Think about what it takes to do the job of a police officer, the mind set required. There is no wonder it attracts unfit members.

I used to work right off East Patapsco Ave, right along the railroad tracks. One side was us, the other side was Cherry Hill. There wasn't a day go by that one of our trucks was not broken into. We even had a 10 foot fence but that didn't stop them.

Question
Is Pollack Johnny's still in operation? They had a place on Baltimore Street on "The Block" that made the world's best Polish hot dogs. They would advertise on the radio "If you don't have gas when you go in you will when you leave". They were great.

As far as I know they are still there, I really avoid the city like the plague though. Never even been to the "block" except riding by years ago. I live in Pasadena, btw. There are more than a few strip clubs between here and the city.

When I first moved to MD I lived in Pasadena, on Lockwood Road off Mountain Road.

Wait, I just remembered something. The Baltimore City Police is controlled not by the city but by the state. The Police Commissioner is appointed by the Governor. So, this may be a Republican issue sad to say.

I just had to look that up, because I thought it didn't sound right. Since 1978, the Mayor of Baltimore has appointed the police commissioner, subject to city council approval.

Even so, our new Republican Governor has not taken office yet.

When I got out of the Navy I thought about buying a house on Lake Shore Drive. $9,000.00 for a stone house on the water. Thought that was outrageous!!! Yes, you can call me stupid if you wish. Saw one posted for half a million!

Thanks, I left in 1977 so I missed that.

Yeah, that will get you 6 months rent in a studio apartment around here now. I love my hometown, but it is really getting too expensive to live here.

One of the things I found charming about Charm City was that it was a city of neighborhoods. The annual Baltimore City Fair would be an opportunity for each neighborhood to highlight why they were the best in the city. Every neighborhood would have a display and each was different in architecture, in ethnic makeup, ambiance etc. I remember Druid Hill, Federal Hill, Charles Village, Fells Point, Little Italy, the Greek community along Eastern Ave. Pimlico South Baltimore and for years I hunted for Holland Town before I realized that was Highlandtown pronounced in typical Balitmoron! When I lived there the population of Baltimore was just under 1 million and was the 6th largest city in the nation. I understand it has dropped by a third and is now in 23rd place. I think the demographics that made Baltimore unique has dispersed and those areas are now just one culture.

I saw on Drugs, Inc. the TV show that Baltimore is the heroin capitol of the US!

Something like 80000 addicts. Yikes! Is that true?

I would go there to see Camden Yards, and the Orioles. Otherwise, no.

The sad thing is that Baltimore, being one of the oldest cities has a lot of history, all of which is being destroyed because its the wrong kind of history.

BTW Raven. I just looked up the area I last lived in in Severna Park (Laguna Circle). The house next door to the one I bought in 1974 for $39,500.00 sold last Feb for $325,000.00. It was 975 sq feet three bedroom one bath room. The last house I sold in Florida in 2006 was 2000 square feet, 4 bedroom 2 bath and I sold it for $225,000.00. I could not afford to live in my old Maryland neighborhood any more!!!!
