Maybe you can fire Code and bring Chloe back and put both of them to monitoring me?

I'm a libertarian so I have socially liberal views and fiscally conservative views and sometimes real crazy "I want no government" views. There are more of us on the forum than any other group and there's only "me" representing that view here, so I do understand wanting equal representation on the mod staff, but the few conservatives we've asked have all shot us down.

Hate to break it to ya GRC, but this forum has an owner and we keep the peace as he would like it to be kept. That means no excessive mouthing off to people you don't agree with. You are here at his pleasure, not vice versa. There is nothing faux about the authoritative force of the moderators. We moderate behavior, not politics. Break the rules and face the consequences. Mods are chosen less for their politics, than their ability to be non-partisan. I'd say it works well, since we get the same complaints of bias from both sides.

Forums such as this are supposed to be fun. It's not like we're on the floor of Congress arguing about a bill. It's most like a bunch of drunks in a bar arguing sports, politics and religion. If it's not fun, time to find a friendlier bar.

Since we have a profanity filter, people who object to colorful language don't have to be assaulted by it. Nevertheless, if that same language is being used to attack another member, it violates the rules and will be dealt with accordingly. It is rare that opinion becomes the object of moderation, unless it actually breaks a rule such as comments that denigrate races, religions, genders or sexual orientation that may be personally offensive either to members or to visitors to the forum.

Report away.A sense of humor is an essential tool for effective communication. Self-deprecating humor is the best, IMO. It could be about the person, their political party or the human race in general.

Those who use "humor" to attack others such as making "colored" jokes, anti-gay jokes, etc are merely being abusive. Same goes for those who ridicule others regardless of their forum status.

I'm not challenging moderation, but I am questioning why there are no social conservatives on the mod staff as representation of a forum where at least 1/3 is or was a social conservative. I don't see many on here anymore which could be a direct result of this. I've heard that it's a balanced moderation team, but I'm not seeing it.

I'm a social liberal in most regards, as well, so I'm not exactly critiquing those who hold that position just asking where is the representation for those who do not share it?

It's hard enough trying to find solid members who show impartiality and objectivity let alone try to fill some political quota by "representing" political camps.

People are chosen for mods because they're dedicated to the forum and show some levelheadedness.

...in my humble, honest and generally 100% accurate opinion of course.

Perhaps, but it is a forum that exists because of the people posting in it and it would be like stacking a court with nothing but liberal judges and not expect them to vote Pro Choice.

I'll give an example, political correctness. This is something that social conservatives don't care about in the least, something that many straddlers like myself don't care about at all, but is a touch point for liberals.

How would an all liberal moderation staff come down on an issue of that?

This is not to say that I think any of them are arses because I have friends on the moderation staff, so obviously I don't think that way. I also think that Pol is excellent because she's not a far left liberal. But she's on a staff with far left liberals and no social conservatives for balance.

This is me being a contrarian, of course. It is just a silly spot to talk on the web.

And @Paperback Writer (http://thepoliticalforums.com/member.php?u=862) - we had just that way back in the beginning, a heavily right tilted mod staff and half of them were busy running off new liberal members as soon as they joined.

A level headed approach to being a moderator is far, far better than his or her political nametag.

So would anyone but you're saying with that, and so are the moderators, that there are no level-headed social conservatives on this forum to choose from. Whether that is true or not, it does send a tacit message.

I don't think the mods political stances are really considered - nor should they be.

A level headed approach to being a moderator is far, far better than his or her political nametag.

Last year when I joined there was a large contingent of active conservative posters. Where are they now? Where is Mainecoons? Where is Amazon Tania?

Of the people who post daily it is mainly liberals and centrists, I use centrists to describe people such as myself who have mixed views. I see only a few active conservative posters now. They may be on the list, but of who actually posts the numbers have dwindled.

I'm also not suggesting that they have a large team of conservatives but there is no balance on that team if I'm to be truthful.

I understand how it all works as I've sat by Drew when he wanted to throw his laptop across the room. Moderators cannot catch everything, but perception is the rule. We'll use the complaint by matalese of they can be called rethuglicans but if she says libtard she'll be banned, yeh? Now, we all know that she says more than libtard. She calls people assholes quite often. But when you see a number of rethuglicans and no warnings it would, to someone conservative, support that.

This is why it would have been wise to try and balance the team, and this is no jab at polwatch because her age and temperament are a good fit.

Who knows - people come and go and one thing I learned during my modding stint is that you're not going to please everyone no matter what the fuck you do. Somebody will always bitch so it's more important to be consistent and clear. At least you have a alibi at that point.

Coons threw a tantrum over Cigar and after his hissy fit he took his toys and went home.

Amazon - again, who knows.

You can't please every member, it's impossible. So either it's going to be just one big clique if we tailor toward one segment or the better alternative is - "here's the rules, they're applied consistently, you do you thing" and let everyone's input and participation define the forum instead of the forum defining the participation.

I don't disagree with any of that, but I'll give an example. Why do you think Mister D has not been chosen? Do you think he would not be able to moderate professionally? Or is it because the undercurrent that he's a <gasp> white racialist?

It's not as if the staff is 5 liberals and 1 conservative. It's all liberals. In the interest of public perception they ought to have at least made the attempt to pick someone like rose or that other chap whose name I can't remember.

Pol was picked because, as Ethereal said, she's delightful. There is a bit of a popularity contest at work. I just observe and point out these things. I don't care so much because my day would not be ruined if I was warned or threadbanned, but I can see where some would be.

Mister D likes to pick up the shovel and swing it around a bit, that's the only reason I can think of that might prohibit him from being asked to be a mod.

He's not a VIP either, nor am I. We were "excused" from the club.

You should ask to become a guest mod for a week or two, it's not easy. Being impartial and being an opinionated member can be very tricky, especially when some combative member is always throwing it in your face that "well, you're a mod so you get to have an opinion and I don't".

Plus you find yourself thinking "well, I can't say that or it will make the mod staff look bad so I'll hold back".

It's not an easy task.

The stuff I like is really off the wall.

@Paperback Writer (http://thepoliticalforums.com/member.php?u=862) - I just found out, my son actually owns a copy of Hot Fuzz, I'm going to watch it this weekend.

@Refugee (http://thepoliticalforums.com/member.php?u=1060) was a interesting. That's a loss. The Brits have been great overall. The Aussies and Kiwis have all been lunatics with one exception.

You know Gerrard is another "Oxbridger" like myself. I do miss his posting, as well as, Tanias.

Sean of the Dead was one of my favourite movies until Hot Fuzz came out. Totally toppled it.

It's actually quite interesting in the wake of all the police issues in the states now. Preface, in the UK there are "armed squads" in major cities. most police never carry a gun. Each major city has an armed squad for say a bank robbery. This peace officer from Town is sent to a village outside Bristol in the countryside where he's an enigma and they all want to know what it's like to carry a gun.

He gets there at a time when there's all sorts of mysterious deaths that no one but him finds strange.

Its a gas. Truly.

Paperback Writer, let's say our mod team was heavily slanted toward conservatives, and we needed a liberal. Let's say Cigar was the only liberal on the forum interested in being a mod.

Should we hire Cigar, or wait until another, more fitting liberal showed interest?

Depends - do we have any black mods?

...ok, I'll shut up now.

Same here. I've know him since, hmm, before 2000 some time. Politically savvy.

If mainecoons is gone, he departed with me agreeing with his points. The guy knew what is going on.

He threw me with his name since I know nothing about cats.

Refugee and I got along the best. He always was very respectful to me. We agreed on virtually all things. When I posted to him, he was so respectful he replied every time.

Well, Bob, why wouldn't y'all get along if you agreed on virtually all things? It's the people who don't agree with you that still deserves respect.

I'm not sure we should be commenting but we're not full up with only conservative versions of Cigar. I agree Dark Mistress, hell, even Cthulhu could represent social conservatism. I also think Hangar is a decent but overlooked conservative poster.

I will say this, I take breaks from this place so I don't think it's my place to question other mods with who they pick. I should be more active and that's the truth.
