Detroit judge sends criminals back to high school

A Detroit judge is schooling criminals…literally.


Wayne County Circuit Judge Deborah Thomas includes formal schooling as part of her punishment to offenders in her courtroom.


She requires them to either go back to high school or to get their GED and even displays the diplomas and certificates on a wall in the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, Detroit News reported. “It motivates them,” she told the paper. “It shows a sense of pride. I have others who come into the courtroom and they say ‘I want mine up there, judge’ or ‘judge, you don’t have to worry, I’m going to get mine up there.’ ”


A lack of education is one of the driving forces behind crime and Thomas said she sees this as a way to put them on the right track.


“Their job prospects are more limited, they have lower self-esteem. But when they have (the diploma) they have success, they realize ‘I can succeed at other things,’ ” Thomas said (http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/wayne-county/2014/12/29/diploma-ged-wayne-judge-sentences/21027005/). “I have two individuals who have promised me bachelor’s degrees.”


Thomas primarily deals with crimes like auto theft, domestic violence and substance abuse, Detroit News reported. Thomas said she gets letters from ex-offenders thanking her for sending them back to high school.


“I tell them just because you came through here doesn’t mean this has to be your permanent route (in life),” Thomas said. “We punish negative behavior. We should reward positive behavior.”

That's probably why her name is Deborah. Most men aren't named Deborah. And if she taught in the Detroit public schools she should be ashamed of herself. They are some of the most worthless schools in this country. I should know having lived there in the inner city.

Unlike some people who spend their days criticizing people they really don't know, he is a 28 year Veteran Engine Designer for General Motors and has over 40 United States Patents. His Wife is a decorated Arny Surgeon, who also was educated by a Detroit city school system.

So tell us, what's your claim to fame again?

If he has worked at GM for 28 years then he probably went to school in Detroit when it wasn't craplousy. DUH. Guess what? Detroit also once had an auto and music industry.

What is my claim to fame? I am a graduate of a now extinct private school in Detroit, extinct because the city died in the late 90s. I am a suma cum laude graduate of the Ivy League of the South, a magna cum laude graduate from a top ten law school, and was employed by both the US Department of State as a legal consultant where I traveled to various countries under the auspices of USAID and also a practicing attorney at a top 5 firm.

I did this before I even turned 30.

Also, unlike some on this forum, I know when to use initial caps and try as much as possible to use a spellcheck to my advantage.
