I'm somewhat sympathetic to the tobacco companies on ths one.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina — Tobacco companies want a judge to put a stop to new graphic cigarette labels that include the sewn-up corpse of a smoker and pictures of diseased lungs, saying they unfairly urge adults to shun their legal products and will cost millions to produce.

Four of the five largest U.S. tobacco companies sued the federal government Tuesday, saying the warnings violate their free speech rights.

"Never before in the United States have producers of a lawful product been required to use their own packaging and advertising to convey an emotionally-charged government message urging adult consumers to shun their products," the companies wrote in the lawsuit filed in federal court in Washington.

Only about a 1/3 of smokers have their lives cut short by smoking. Or at least that's how I understand it. In any case, what's next? Graphic depictions of clogged arteries and heart disease on your pizza box? How about a diseased heart on your next Whopper wrapper?

That or what your liver looks like with alcohol poisoning.....Plus politicans always get to raise those taxes. Wonder what would happen if all the Cigarette Companies were put out of buisness. Means people would have to grow their own and back to natural Vendors and tobacco thats not made with wine chcocalte and other addictive substances.

This is absurd. I'm no fan of smoking but these labels sound ridiculous. Yeah, alcohol is a huge public health issue, but I don't see the government pushing labels on bottles.

Mind you, I think smoking is a dumb habit and I certainly don't encourage it but this is going too far. I don't want government agencies trying to manipulate me even if they think its for my own good.

And yet the government makes so much money off these cigarettes...conflict of interest? If they got everyone to quit there would be a big money drain.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe they figure fed and state governments will save money overall with the healthcare savings. ???

Then they will switch it to Gambling Casinos.....in which they will spend the money before the first dime is collected.

LOL I try to stay away from Pizza. Dern Dr. gets on me about things. Have to admit I have always loved Pizza. Both my parents died of massive heart-attacks. I do try and eat right even though I still only weigh 128lbs and 5 '71/2". It's a shame before I reached 45 I could eat anything without any warning signs.

I consider myself a Christian but I am still very fearful of death. Besides that, I do worry a lot about my parents as they grow older. I know it's a matter of when, not if, for all of us but I don't think I'll ever be ok with it.
