LANSING, MI — The Republican National Committee's executive committee on Wednesday formally censured Michigan member Dave Agema, according to state and national party officials.

Agema, a Grandville Republican, has come under fire for a series of controversial Facebook posts and statements about gays, Muslims and African Americans.

“Dave Agema’s history of harmful and offensive rhetoric has no place in our party, which is why the RNC executive committee acted in the swiftest way possible to avoid giving him a platform,” RNC Chair Reince Priebus said in a statement.

The censure, a formal repudiation of Agema, will not immediately force him out of the post but could put added pressure on him to resign. Priebus said the party is working to reach out to minority communities and "cannot allow one man’s fringe views to undermine the work that is ahead of us.”

The Agema controversy has been brewing for more than a year after the former state lawmaker reposted to Facebook a dubious article purporting to highlight risks associated with the "filthy" homosexual lifestyle.

He later shared a post questioning whether Muslims had ever made positive contributions to American society and subsequently referenced "camel jockeys." On New Year's Eve, he reposted a racially-charged article that had originally been published in a white supremacist magazine.
