Two high school teachers in Southern California have been arrested on suspicion of having sexual relations with students on an overnight beach camping trip.


South Hills High School teacher Melody Lippert allegedly met a group of male students in November at the beach in San Clemente, where she gave them alcohol and "engaged in a sexual relationship with one of them," according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

I was merely using that as an example that this is not anything new. I don't think it has a damn thing to do with political affiliation either. It does not tell the age of the male students in your link, but if they are 16 or over, the only reason this would be a crime in my state, at least, is because they were the boy's teachers (authority figures). Not because of the age difference.

Yah, the URL notes that the 2nd woman had been a teacher, & was assigned to an office. It's not clear there if she was still teaching or not, or had regular contact with students.

But yes, inappropriate contact with students is not allowed, & can be prosecuted. We - the US - don't provide free public education K-12 as a dating service - it's about education & preparation for the real World, but with a focus on preparing the students to participate in the larger World. More education, work, career, family - that kind of thing, not one-night stands on a beach.

Either way, the two women violated their contracts - there's usually an ethics statement in there somewhere - a leftover from Wild West days, but it's usually there. Something along the lines of "conduct unbecoming" will do - they can both lose their jobs. Certainly it's bad for teacher morale & makes teaching more difficult when teachers become actual sex partners with students. High school students can be difficult in any event, this behavior is unacceptable.

Teachers are delegated a lot of authority by the state & their local community. These two crossed a lot of lines, & abused their positions of trust. It's time for them to start over, in some other field of endeavor. We can hope they've learned a lesson in all this mess. & the school can go back to focusing on the educational endeavor.

Libertine is qualitative - you're not going to shame someone into behaving by calling them that. The libertine has no morals to speak of - @ least in sexual matters - so it's not a matter of quantity, or number of lovers/partners, whatever the term may be.

Sexual attraction between teachers & students, between male & female - is an age-old problem, & one reason that teachers in the pioneering days out West (for example) were barred from bars, theaters, burlesque halls, dances, smoking, drinking, cursing, spitting, fighting, etc. Single women (maybe men?) in the office were barred from dating. If the school was part of church ministry, the teacher likely had to be part of the congregation, & toe any doctrinal lines as well.

We're a long way from those days. & yet, we still have to deal with inappropriate behavior. Some things are simply not going to change - it's in the nature of high school students to have sexual feelings. & teachers are human. We simply have to be careful, & make sure everyone understands what's acceptable & what isn't.

Yah. The problem in this discussion is that you're beating a dead horse. @ least, I don't see anyone condoning the two women's actions in having sex with high school boys. Liberal or Conservative, the purpose to schooling is education - typically academic, maybe practical, but certainly not to learn how to date or hook up.

What we can do is tighten up the procedures & make sure that everyone understands what happens to educational staff who mistake their job for a dating site. I'd say pull the two women's teaching licenses, assuming that they still have them (maybe pending investigation?) There may be union rules in the way - the local school board may have to petition the state DOE, or a sex offense conviction may be sufficient to pull their licenses.

Sex addicted? Sounds like a diagnosis to me. If you don't mind my asking - Did you interview the perps? Examine their psychosocial histories, take their family histories, evaluate their meds, their state of inebriation/intoxication @ the time of the various incidents, & on & on?

The incidence of these sexual encounters is certainly covered a lot in the ENG, especially the 24/7 news. But you have to make up your mind - if you're blaming the mass media, the 24/7 news is one of the biggest inflicters of poor morals (or @ least purveyors - take your pick) in the modern US home. Talking to a former local news anchor in the ad/pr agency I used to work for, he said: If it bleeds, it leads. So pretty explosions, fires, teachers & such caught in flagrante delicto are especially welcomed - seeing as how the rich & powerful don't typically present themselves to do the perp walk of shame.

Did Liberals create this mess? Yellow Journalism long predates the alleged slide in public morals - which used to be ascribed to Modernity (post Industrial Revolution? It's hard to pin this stuff down.) The Big Cities also used to be a favorite whipping boy for these charges of moral relativism. But the burgeoning industrial concerns & big media tended to be owned by shared stock companies, &/or pioneering industrialists. Liberals were typically political theorists, philosophers, maybe writers. They later moved more into the academic world & education in general - which I suppose explains the Conservative's beef with education & anything that smacks of cultural (or any other kind) of elites.
