http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/2015-state-of-the-union/what-you-need-know-about-obamas-state-union-speech-n289176

Even in the era of declining television audiences, President Obama's State of the Union address is still the biggest audience he'll have all year.

Historically, seventh-year State of the Union speeches have a short shelf life.

Every one of the five lame-duck presidents (that is, presidents constitutionally barred from running again — Eisenhower, Reagan, Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama) have all had opposition congresses, making the prospects for passing major parts of the president's agenda slim to none.

But on Tuesday Obama will try to use his speech to frame the debates for the next two years and set the table for the 2016 election.

Here are five things to watch:

1. How does the president talk about the economy ?
2. What tone will he take toward Congress ?
3. Will Obama challenge his own party ?
4. How does the president avoid looking like the "small ball" president ?
5. How does he talk about Iran, ISIS and the new terrorist threats ?

too much substance and people will start to expect the new Congress to deliver something. I don't think that will happen. She will be better off (politically) to stick to reheated rhetoric. I don't mean this in a negative way...I don't think anyone will be surprised when Obama does everything he can to block any changes. Repubs would be smart to not make promises they can't keep.

How'bout the GOP Rebuttal in espanol ... LOL

The GOP has also announced it will be offering a Spanish-language rebuttal which will be delivered tonight by freshman Florida Rep. Carlos Curbelo

http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2015/01/joni-ernst-carlos-curbelo-spanish-state-union-republican

.. a young conservative from a diverse Miami congressional district.

But there's a wrinkle. According to a press release from the House Republicans, (http://www.gop.gov/rep-curbelo-to-deliver-republican-spanish-language-address/) Curbelo will not be sharing his own thoughts and words with the public.

Instead, he will only be reading a Spanish translation of Ernst's speech.

Curbelo's office confirmed that he will not be delivering his own remarks.

Judging by his recent history, it doesn’t really matter what President Obama says in Tuesday’s State of the Union address — Congress is going to ignore him anyway.

Mr. Obama has the second-worst record of getting his State of the Union policy requests enacted into law of any president in the last five decades, according to an analysis by two scholars that puts him only above the unelected two-year presidency of Gerald Ford....r

66. And, the absurdity of The State of the Union Address itself....Article Two of the United States Constitution

Section 3: Presidential responsibilities

Clause 1: State of the Union

The President must give the Congress information on the "State of the Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_the_Union_Address)" "from time to time."

This is called the State of the Union Clause.

Originally, Presidents personally delivered annual addresses to Congress.

Thomas Jefferson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Jefferson), who felt that the procedure resembled the Speech from the Throne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speech_from_the_Throne) delivered by British monarchs, chose instead to send written messages to Congress for reading by clerks.

Jefferson's procedure was followed by future Presidents until Woodrow Wilson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodrow_Wilson) reverted to the former procedure of personally addressing Congress, which has continued to this day.

Kesavan and Sidak explain the purpose of the State of the Union clause:

"The State of the Union Clause imposes an executive duty on the President.
That duty must be discharged periodically.
The President's assessment of the State of the Union must be publicized to Congress, and thus to the nation.

The publication of the President's assessment conveys information to Congress- information uniquely gleaned from the President's perspective in his various roles as Commander-in-Chief, chief law enforcer, negotiator with foreign powers, and the like-that shall aid the legislature in public deliberation on matters that may justify the enactment of legislation because of their national importance."

Obama wants a lot of wonderful things, I would also like to see many of the items he spoke of happen one day. Unfortunately, they all cost money, a lot of money. To keep businesses here and not overseas, we have to make the cost doing business here more attractive, financially. Requiring businesses to pay higher minimum wages, pay higher taxes, provide mandated healthcare coverage, mandated 7 days sick leave and now maybe universal childcare, will drive many businesses elsewhere. To provide what he suggested, to a very receptive Democratic audience, will require massive tax increases from somewhere.

His speech sounded good, but was full of theoretical idealistic dreams that have an enormous, unrealistic price tag.

It still sounded more like a campaign speech than a state of the union address to me.

Why? Well here it is.

Bush 43 inherited $5.943 trillion from Clinton in '01. When Bush left in '09 Obama inherited $10.699 trillion. An increase of $5.8 trillion, that is what Bush 43 added in 8 years.

The National Debt from all presidents from Washington to Bush 43 totals only $6.3 Trillion.

Obama has already added $7,391,264,385,873 (and growing) in just 6 years. He has added more to our National Debt than all the previous 43 Presidents did in 230 years.

IMO he's the most dangerous president we've ever had. I don't care what some want to call it, socialism, Marxism, Communism, whatever. It is taking this nation down a rosy path to disaster. He's lining the path with carrots and the ignorant donkey follows happily, unaware the path leads to the cliff's edge.

If you scoff at this just remember Obama's words last night reminding us he won the election twice, so basically he's saying to his critics STFU! He needs to be reminded he won as PRESIDENT, not KING.

His SOU speech failed to take into account the ass whooping his policies took in November. He knows people are wising up to his failed policies and rejected them. Now he'll throw it into overdrive to force his ideology on us, refrusing to listen to the voice of the people and let our system work as it was intended.
He says "we must work together" then in the next breath threatens four vetos. He's the great divider, a cancer to democracy.

lol... 32% of registered voters voted. 52% of those voted for republicans. 17% of registered voters is a victory for the GOP, no doubt. But to call it an ass whooping" is pretty ridiculous.

Democratic Senator Joe Manchin and Fox News’ Bob Beckel (http://www.mediaite.com/power-grid/person/?q=Bob+Beckel) used the same language today to describe what happened to the Democrats last night: they got an ass-whooping.
Well, at least they’re not sugarcoating it (http://www.mediaite.com/tv/5-ways-liberals-are-consoling-themselves-after-devastating-midterms/).

Manchin actually said the words “this is a real ass-whoopin’” in an interview with The Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2014/11/05/joe-manchin-on-election-results-this-is-a-real-a-whooping/), in which he vented his frustrations with Senate Democratic leadership and practically begged Harry Reid to let them actually get stuff done. He said, “I think that people felt that the Democrats didn’t work, did not reach out, basically played politics all the way through.”

Beckel was similarly candid about how poorly the Democrats did on The Five today. Eric Bolling (http://www.mediaite.com/power-grid/person/?q=Eric+Bolling) was talking about how the media span the GOP’s big night into a negative and threw rain on the victory parade.
He told Beckel that the media is acting like “crybabies.” And Beckel said people need to own up to what happened:

"You can’t look at it any other way than we got our asses whooped. It’s as simple as that. We’re gonna whoop their ass the next time around."

what a DINO and Faux News guy say is all well and good. Do YOU think that 52% of 32% of the registered voters actually constitutes an ass whooping? Really?

Why not? Bob Beckel is a hard line Dem. If he calls it an a$$ whooping that's good enough for me.

cool. will it be an ass whooping in the other direction when Hillary wins the white house by 51-49, and the D's take back the senate 51-49? Or will those be hotly contested narrowly decided elections?

You approve of Piano legs Hillary?

She is not qualified.

Even Democrats have much better to offer.

I will approve of and support, not only with my absentee vote, but with my checkbook, whatever candidate wins the democratic nomination. In the early going, I will donate to, and support the campaign of Jim Webb, should he announce his candidacy.
