What is it with Obama? The man either has no judgment skills or he's too lazy to check people out before trying to appoint them to high positions. Disgusting how much time & money he wastes on decisions like this... and there's no telling how many have slipped thru the cracks and now occupy important jobs in our govt.

WH Lukewarm After Ambassador Nominee’s Sexy Emails
(http://www.whitehousedossier.com/)June 13, 2012

Today was probably the beginning of the end for Obama Iraq Ambassador nominee Brett McGurk, as the White House failed to call on the Senate to approve his nomination.

McGurk’s latest problem is some racy emails that popped up between him and Wall Street Journal reporter Gina Chon from 2008, when he was working at the embassy and Chon was covering Iraq for the Journal. Both were married at the time, and have since divorced and married each other.

Chon was fired by the Journal over the affair.

The emails, an unverified version of which appears on the website Cryptome (http://cryptome.org/2012/06/mcgurk-chon/mcgurk-chon.htm), includes an extended discussion of the ambassador nominee’s “blue balls.”

Six Republican members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee sent a letter to President Obama today charging that McGurk lacks leadership and management experience and engaged in “unprofessional conduct.” Even panel Chairman Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) said there are “some very fair questions being asked.”

And so White House Press Secretary Jay Carney signalled McGurk may be toast.

Let’s do some White House tea leaf reading together, shall we? Carney said today of McGurk:

We believe that our nation will be greatly served by his experiences in Iraq, and we look forward to the Senate’s advice and consent on his appointment.

Looks nice, but note the careful Constitution-based language. Presidents don’t ever look forward to the Senate’s advice. Not after making a nomination. Nor do they ever seek anyone’s “consent.” They demand support. Imagine if Obama said, “I’m seeking John Boehner’s consent for my latest proposal.”

Pressed further, Carney said:

I would simply say that we believe that the United States will be greatly served by Mr. McGurk’s experience in Iraq, which is substantial.

Well, perhaps. But Carney, you will note, is not specifically saying McGurk should be the ambassador.

The President supports his nomination. He put him forward.

The president supports his nomination? What does that mean? Again, Carney carefully avoids saying Obama supports Senate approval of his nomination.

Bye bye, McGurk.

Follow the link to the emails... it's like reading a trashy novel.

[Excerpts]

QUESTION: On another subject, this nomination of Brett McGurk, is it in trouble? And can you confirm that the State Department is investigating allegations of these emails between him and Ms. Chon of The Wall Street Journal?

MS. NULAND: Well, first of all, on the subject of the emails, they're out there for everybody to see. I'm not going to get into emails between Mr. McGurk and the woman who subsequently became his wife. With regard to Mr. McGurk's nomination, I think you know that he spent the better part of the last decade serving our country in and out of Iraq, working for a Republican administration, a Democratic administration. He is, in our view, uniquely qualified to serve as our ambassador, and we urge the Senate to act quickly on his nomination.

QUESTION: So obviously you're sticking with him. But can you confirm that -- because there are reports -- that the State Department actually has looked into these alleged emails, or the allegations that these might have compromised security or sensitive information?

MS. NULAND: I don't have anything to say on the emails.

QUESTION: Can I just follow up on that?

MS. NULAND: Yeah.

QUESTION: Because, I mean, there are rules for Foreign Service officers to not get into situations where you're blackmailed. There's sort of a sense that you have to act morally. There are these regulations in your guidebooks. And some people have lost security clearances over having extramarital affairs. So I wonder why it is that this doesn't seem to be -- factor at all into your decision in keeping this -- keeping his nomination out there.

MS. NULAND: Again, we consider him uniquely qualified. All of the necessary things were done before his nomination, and we urge the Senate to confirm him.
