The White House will halt the deportation of as many as 800,000 young illegal immigrants and in some cases give them work permits, in a sweeping new initiative announced by the Department of Homeland Security.

People under 30 who entered the country illegaly or overstayed their visas when they were under the age of 16 will be immune from deportation if they have not committed a significant misdemeanor or felony and have graduated from a U.S. high school or joined the military. They can apply for a renewable two-year work permit that won't provide a path to citizenship but will allow them to work legally in the country.

President Obama has faced criticism from the crucial Hispanic electorate for ramping up deportations under his tenure and for failing to deliver on his campaign promise to pass comprehensive immigration reform within his first year in office. Several times in the past year, Obama has told Hispanic audiences who asked him why he did not issue an executive order halting deportations of some classes of immigrants that such a move would be legally impossible. It's unclear what made him change his mind.

The move may generate enthusiasm among many Latinos: 85 percent of registered Latino voters said in a Latino Decisions poll (http://www.latinodecisions.com/blog/2011/02/28/why-the-dream-act-will-matter-in-2012/)that they support the Dream Act. The president enjoys a strong lead among Hispanic voters over Mitt Romney, but a lack of enthusiasm among these voters could mean they stay home on Election Day in swing states like Nevada, Colorado and Florida.

President Obama will address the change in a speech at 1:15 pm.....snip~

This is today that Obama has flipped the script. Talk about jumping right out for the hispanic vote. All this time he does nothing and now makes a last ditch effort to get them in his corner. Hey, I'll save your kids vote for me. Lets hope they ain't drinking the kool-aid.

Of course they will drink it. It's their legal ticket to stay here. They'll vote for him too, since they wouldn't want this repealed. Is this an executive order???

President Obama has deported more illegals than any President before him.

Says he will be releasing a Statement this afternoon on it......La Raza was on his azz about the Deportations. Evidently Neopolitian got the phone call early this morning after Obama got more word on him losing ground in Florida, Pennsylcania and Ohio. Looks like this will cement him in Utah and Nevada.

Plus lets not forget yesterday he gave the Medal of Freedom to Peres to go after that Jewish Vote.

Then changed his stance on gay marriage. To get their vote.

All within the early stages of his campaign. IMO I say let him tip his hand. Then what will he have to offer?

How many of these illegals wanted to go back because the economy here is so bad that they turned themselves into ICE for a free ride home and while they wait, they get 3 meals a day, clean bathrooms, air conditioning, recreation...etc.???...;)

This should get their panties fully in a huge Wad! :afro:

Obama administration to grant work permits to younger, law-abiding illegal immigrantsThe Obama administration will stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of an influential Latino electorate that has been vocal in its opposition to administration deportation policies.

The policy change, described to The Associated Press by two senior administration officials, will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. It also bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the so-called DREAM Act, a long-sought but never enacted plan to establish a path toward citizenship for young people who came to the United States illegally but who have attended college or served in the military.

The left is more concerned with all the votes that they can get than they are with the law.

This is the next logical result of a history of allowing the Executive to literally write laws or ignore those they don't agree with.

I am OK with this. It makes no sense to be kicking out "illegals" who were brought here as kids by their parents, and who have a clean record of accomplishment since. I am one of those Conservatives that believes that we screwed up but not securing the borders long ago, and now must find a practical way to deal with 10 million illegals.

However, Obama can still be beat over the head with this, as securing the border is what Americans want. He has neglected that, as he has also stifled states in enforcing laws against illegal adults.

But the GOP needs a practical solution about 10 million illegals too. And they have stone-walled and pontificated without getting much done themselves. Didn't do squat when we ran everything.

The only determinant of what is right for the people ought to be the Constitution. And this action is unconstitutional, the power, if it falls to the federal government at all, and not the states, falls to Congress, and not the President.

Sadly yes, until it is their own rights which are infringed upon. Then it's rather odd how that document suddenly becomes oh so important to them.

Like liberals who scream first amendment speech in defense of calling for the assassination of then President G.W. Bush, who now oh so conveniently dismiss the document and that self same first amendment in order too claim it is treasonous to even dissent from The Obama, and their liberal socialism.

So again he side-steps Congress.....hopefully all those unregistered independant voters notice that. Mocks the SCOTUS and keeps going around Congress. Even if the system isn't working. We cannot keep on having a President telling all about fair play and following the rules. While he don't apply them to himself.

I think the main reason you don't hear more members of Congress saying something about this is because when they get into office, they want to be able to pull the same crap. This exectutive order stuff has to stop. There is no need for it today like there was in the past.

Are you OK with the result, or are you OK with the President usurping Congress and adding legislation to the President's portfolio, damn the Constitution?

Several points. I am OK with an amnesty for those brought here as kids as part of a comprehensive immigration program. First and foremost in that would be to secure the borders. I can blame Obama and Dems all I want that such has not been done, but the GOP didn't get it done either when it had the chance. The result is that immigration policy is still FUBAR, which enables Obama to pull such as this.

As noted in many posts, folks are wondering WTF with regard to the President taking this initiative. Its a political risk on his part, but one I believe he can win. He can point to Congress not doing anything, while also adding to his base a little bit with this. Being able to make political hay against Obama on this may be limited. Those against can claim usurption of power, but I don't think that will sway many one way or the other who were not already pro or anti Obama. Or the claim can be made "you're allowing them to take jobs while Americans don't have work", which sounds good at first to some, but also isn't quite the case here. This is more of a "Dream-Act" low-cal version.

We hear the silence on this one, as in the end, I believe it was low-hanging political fruit left by the GOP for Obama to pick. I think that the GOP blew it by not getting out on front on this, something Marco Rubio has been pushing, and Obama grabbed it. We will see how much the GOP can shape this as Obama taking an easy way out while ignoring the tough stuff ........... which the GOP has been guilty of as well.

Agreed. But it remains to be seen how the GOP will play this. My guess is that they will say something like "OK, you felt the need to usurp Congress on this because you felt this semi-amnesty was the right thing to do. Meanwhile, you do everything possible to block such as AZ and AL from enforcing the most basic of immigration statutes. Its all political hackery with you Obama" and hope it sticks. What I do not expect them to say is that we have to deport these kids.
