MOSCOW (AP) — Two Russian navy ships are completing preparations to sail to Syria with a unit of marines on a mission to protect Russian citizens and the nation's base there, a news report said Monday.
The deployment appears to reflect Moscow's growing concern about Syrian President Bashar Assad's future. The official said the ships will carry an unspecified number of marines to protect Russians in Syria and evacuate some equipment from Tartus, if necessary.

Each ship is capable of carrying up to 300 marines and a dozen tanks, according to Russian media reports. That would make it the largest known Russian troop deployment to Syria, signaling that Moscow is becoming increasingly uneasy about Syria's slide toward civil war.Russian officials have said that other Russian navy ships that have called at Tartus this year also had marines on board, but it has remained unclear whether they rotated the troops at Tartus or simply protected the ships during their mission and returned home.

Russia also has an unspecified number of military advisers teaching Syrians how to use Russian weapons, which make up the bulk of Syrian arsenals.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton issued a harsh reprimand of Russia last week, when she said that Moscow "dramatically" escalated the crisis in Syria by sending attack helicopters there. The State Department acknowledged later the helicopters she accused Moscow of sending were actually refurbished ones already owned by the Assad regime, but Russia was clearly annoyed, and the spat further fueled tensions ahead of President Barack Obama's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Mexico on Monday.....snip~

Russia is only giving the US something to think about. Russia knows that any US attack will be limited to naval and air power.

Also Russia knows that since the Gulf War, the US has demonstrated that Russian weapons are not very effective against the US. We used GPS guided missiles to destroy anti-GPS weapon systems.

It ensures no US ground involvement. Russia knows the frail-ability of American losses of military lives whereas they could send in a million troops and wouldn't think twice about it, even if they lost half of them. They would merely site their history as a means of placating their own people.

Would that be like when the Brits did so with the Russians? You know back with Peter and then later with Stalin.

Think the Arab League will man up and send in their own? Or back off now. The Saud and Qataris want the UN to send in Armed peacekeepers now.

Beevee said that the US was adverse to taking ground troop causalities. True. But that applies to the Arab League as well.

Well pretty much any. Still Clinton got played with the Helicopter issue. Not to mention Putin had his meeting with Obama and that didnt go to good neither. I havent heard of AQ or the Free Syrian Army Rebels going after the Russians inside Syria tho.

Russia has zero desire to have its troops engaged in fighting. It knows Syria is a morass. Any view that Russia is OK with losing troops in Syria is dumber than a box of rocks.

However, protecting their base there, so as to create a safe haven from which to evacuate, makes good sense. Syria's own military could go all to crap quickly.

The Syrians or the rebels are not going to target the Russians. There were some Russian diplomats who were captured in Iraq back around 2006-07. Putin sent in some Spetnaz and told them not to come back without bringing honor to Russia. Never did here the result. I do know that they negotiated free reign with US forces.
