Pelosi heads congressional democratic delegation in Cuba

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/cuba/article10559894.html

U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi landed Tuesday in Cuba as head of a congressional delegation.

The delegation will meet with Cuban government officials, Cardinal Jaime Ortega and Alamino, as well as local community leaders and US officials, who operate within the United States Interests Section, according to a statement.

“This delegation will work to advance relations between the United States and Cuba and will be based on the work carried out by many in Congress during the past few years, especially in regards to agriculture and commerce,” Pelosi said.

The Democratic representative for California highlighted that the delegation traveled “in friendship."

U.S.-Cuba deal a cause for optimism for Louisiana businesses

Prior to the creation of the trade embargo in 1962, New Orleans was the U.S.'s largest trading partner with the communist nation. Port of New Orleans (http://topics.nola.com/tag/port-of-new-orleans/index.html)

President and CEO Gary LaGrange suggested that tourism and trade between the city and Cuba could substantially improve if talks proceed.

"Should Cuba open its doors to us, cruise ships could start heading to Cuba and use New Orleans as a homeport," LaGrange said.

A Cuban port of call, he added, would make seven-day cruises to Key West, Nassau and Havana an obvious draw.

In 2005, then-Gov. Kathleen Blanco visited Havana with LaGrange and a few dozen business representatives to establish a $15-million deal that boosted agricultural exports from Louisiana to Cuba.

This was possible under a 2001 amendment to the trade embargo that let U.S. companies engage in cash-only sales of food and agricultural products.

Today, Louisiana is the top state of origination for Cuban-bound exports, representing nearly 30 percent of the export-market share, according to the World Trade Center of New Orleans.

The Port of New Orleans now exports large quantities of poultry to Cuba, and the Port of Lake Charles exports rice.

Since Mobile has been sister cities with Havana for many years, they are hoping the unused cruise terminal in Mobile gets some ships going to Cuba first. Since Mobile is still paying the notes on the cruise terminal, the taxpayers would really be happy to see the USS Minnow departing for Havana from Mobile.

I keep wondering who has cash to spend in Cuba given they make all of $19 per month.

That won't buy you many dead chickens.

There is a growing consumer class.

When I was there I saw many small private businesses ranging from restaurants to B&B's. There is even a thriving real estate market.

You said that before but never explained how you can do much of anything on nineteen dollars per month income.

From your link of 2013.

More and more Cubans are opening bed and breakfasts, cafes and snack bars, small shops and markets, and offering services in areas such as construction and technology. But challenges in accessing capital, along with burdensome taxation, often prevent some of these operations from growing into larger firms.
It remains to be seen whether the powerful Cuba state is prepared to allow these businesses to expand and partner with state entities, creating a hybrid market socialist economy that can accelerate growth into a legitimate boom.

Yeah, I didn't say it was a perfect system. It's going to take time. But like I said, there is a growing middle class that is a potential consumer base for the US. There are Cuban's making next to nothing digging ditches and there are Cuban's making much more money in the tourism industry and the thriving small business industry. The median income in the US is only 30,000. Certainly there are many Americans making much more than that.

Cuba is complicated. maybe you should do some research if you're interested. Their idiotic two currency system is a good place to start. But the fact is the country has potential and is filled with people longing for freedom and to enter a more consumer based system. Opening relations with them will only help.

You know very well that in the Caribbean there are many islands. So many you can take many trips and not need to visit Cuba.

This helps Cuba. It does not help the USA.

Cuba has oppressive taxes based on your own article.

I still can't shake my memories of communism.

Let me show you a busy Sunday Day in East Berlin then i was there
Scroll bar at bottom ... please scroll to the right to see the nearly deserted street scene.

Keep in mind the sheer enormous size of Berlin. That while this black and white photo from 1963 may not matter to you, blocks from this scene was the uber busy Sunday enjoyed by millions of Germans living in freedom.
I shot the photo due to the sheer difference in the busy streets in West Berlin vs the nearly empty streets in the East.

The photo is not best quality due to the negatives having been stored for many years with no processing. The date on the bottom right is when i used my digital camera and photographed the black and white. 2014 was when i did it.

Yeah, so lets punish the people of Cuba and prolong communism in the western hemisphere because Bob has bad memories of East Berlin.

Commerce will kill communism in Cuba.

It doesn't really matter anyways...renewed relations are going to happen regardless of your disapproval. I guess we'll see how it turns out.

You sure have a fancy way of not getting it.

You are telling me to export US Dollars to Cuba to do for Cubans what their masters refuse to do for them.

Bear in mind, that we Americans more than likely still can't catch an airplane at the local airport headed to Cuba. These things normally take months to enact. You may see Obama as a GOD figure. i see him as a narcissistic type who thinks of himself as the king of the USA with total power.

If you Canadians love Cuba, take them your cash.

I don't mind you going to Cuba.

So far, has your Canadian currency caused them to earn 19 dollars per month or has their income declined?

They said that food, booze, and entertainment was quite inexpensive and the hotel was about $120/night, but it wasn't really all that great. You can rent a totally restored '57 chevy convertible to cruise around Havana for about $15/hour.
