Fox host Lisa "Kennedy" Montgomery suggested getting rid of the nation's public schools during a discussion on Thursday's "Outnumbered."

Kennedy's comments came during a segment about an Oklahoma bill (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/oklahoma-ban-ap-us-history), approved by a House committee, that seeks to eliminate AP US History. The bill asserts that the current iteration of the course doesn't show "American exceptionalism," instead highlighting "what is bad about America."

"There really shouldn't be public schools, should there?" Kennedy said. "I mean we should really go to a system where parents of every stripe have a choice, have a say in the kind of education their kids get because, when we have centralized, bureaucratic education doctrines and dogmas like this, that's exactly what happens."

Everyone should be forced to home school their children; that way they'd be able to instill their values and beliefs in their children and only have themselves to blame if their kids were under performers.

Agreed, but nobody will ever agree on educational standards.

The gubmint should build roads and bridges, deliver mail (maybe) and kill terrorists. The Republic should set more of the common things regionally, out of federal hands.

But what do I know.

Well it is a socialist ideal... How about if we keep K-8 and Trade School the other 4 years unless your parents want to pay to send you to 9-12. Tax benefits would apply.

Without public schools the poor and the lower middleclass wouldnt stand a chance. The richer americans can afford the best, to hire the best and the graduating down from there to not being able to educate their kids at all.

There are many millions of parents who arent educated themselves how do you expect them to educate their kids when they cant afford to hire a tutor.

No, not at all, I don't believe I said that. I stated what part of her comment I liked. Not everyone can afford private school. My parents sent us to Catholic school, 12 years. We received an exceptional education by comparison. In the 6th grade I went to public school for one week, until a seat opened in Catholic school. I hated it, I cried everyday. There was no order, no discipline, at least not like I was used to. The discipline, even though sometimes it was a bit much, created an atmosphere condusive to learning. We were all required to read at three grade levels above our grade and score at least one grade higher in math skills.

Not everyone can home school. We do need public schools, but not the system we see now in many areas.

The government approves the carriculum, it varies as each administration flexes it's muscles. Parents need more control over what their kids read and hear and are exposed to.

Just like people complained that schools had too much religion, ex: prayers in school, "God" in the Pledge of Alligience, prayers at sports events and rallied to stop it, people need to do likewise because the pendulum as swung too far to the left. Our children are a captive audience for all the far left propaganda they can dish out, teaching them about Islam, but not one word about Christianity or Judaism.
Parents need more control. Public schools as they stand now are failing our children and to paraphrase Kennedy, are probably doing as much good as having no public schools at all.

We need to revamp them to allow our children to compete in a very tough world market.

Most parents are unequipped to homeschool their kids. Many believe what they think is teaching is merely indoctrinating their kids.

Teaching is a profession its not based on someones personal beliefs. Its based on knowledge aquired through history etc.
This comes down to basics, take public schools and the wealthy can afford the best for their kids in tutors etc. The quality would graduated down from there to no education whatsoever.

The public school system was designed to enslave the general population to the state and monied interests. So when people say the system isn't working, they're wrong, because the system is doing just what it was meant to do. It keeps us dumb enough to prop up the politicians that rob us of our rights and wealth, and just smart enough to run the factories and stores.

Do you reallize how many people in this country dont go to school, public or not, or drop out or get thrown out.

Its absolutely ludicrous to blame public schools for uneducated people. Most of the rich and successful came from public schools for decades. Its like anything else, you can lead a horse to water, you know the rest. If your kid is a foulball and does not want to apply themselves it doesnt matter if you have a 10k a day tutor or a public school teacher.

Besides all that more than half the country cant afford home schools. They cant afford a tutor and they are unable to teach themselves.

Were you home schooled ?

That's great. And yet when this country was founded 85% of people were educated and had independent livelihoods. Today 23% of America is illiterate, half of Americans don't read books and can't read above an eighth grade level, and more than half of Americans get government assistance. That's with the public school system. Dropouts are not the problem here. The system is.

I wasn't home-schooled. I was self-schooled since I actually did want to be educated and the public school system didn't want to be a part of that.

Rather than bottle up all those graphics in a quote, I'll keep this simple: We don't really have public "schools." What we have, at least in inner cities, are huge warehouses for children. It's big business cramming classrooms full of children so that a district can make out like a bandit with the money the state provides each child with. They can afford to graduate total knuckleheads who can't even read their diplomas.

Quite a few. A lot of them aren't in school even when they are physically in the classroom.

Its absolutely ludicrous to blame public schools for uneducated people.
Oh, really? Then why are we PAYING those schools to educate the kids? We aren't paying anyone else to do it.

Most of the rich and successful came from public schools for decades.
Actually, that's quite true. Rush Limbaugh attended a public school and he's rich and successful

Its like anything else, you can lead a horse to water, you know the rest. If your kid is a foulball and does not want to apply themselves it doesnt matter if you have a 10k a day tutor or a public school teacher.
There is that problem of lazy parents not valuing education. Thank liberalism and the welfare state for that. Thing is, we're STILL paying for government schools. So we have the RIGHT to demand we get our money's worth. We have the RIGHT to demand standards. End the social promotion. End the coddling of the little bastards. Bring more discipline in the classrooms and less liberal indoctrination.

Besides all that more than half the country cant afford home schools. They cant afford a tutor and they are unable to teach themselves.
Home schooling isn't about affordability. It's about parents actually taking an active role in their kid's education. Not all parents give a rat's ass about their kids' education.

Interestingly enough, one time Florida Governor Jeb Bush signed into law the top education reform bill in the country, effectively putting Florida government schools toward the TOP of the national list. The bill stressed testing and raising standards. Teachers hated it, but the job got done.

Too bad TODAY'S Jeb isn't as conservative as that one was.

True that. Public schooling is funded by taxpayers and teaches kids what to think instead of how to think, which is why the current majority is as low-information as would be possible with any kind of given "education." Yet if you put it in their own language people can figure out how to vote for the guy that will give them the most stuff from other people who earned it. Let's expand government because the people are dumb as fuck. Well why are the people dumb as fuck? Because the government is teaching them. It's trickle-down dumbfuckery.

Actually if we took the money that is spent on public education, and then added the money from closing the department of education, every parent would have about 15K to spend on their child's education. And that would buy a lot better education that they are getting today!

The public school system has been in decline since the federal government became involved in the Carter years. The worst thing we can do for the poor is to force them to keep using a system that has proven to fail their children.

That is the problem with the progressive agenda, it never wants to stop programs that have stopped working

the answer to fixing the current education system is of course giving the families the power to choose.

A voucher system was working in DC until the Obama administration ended it. We must ask why? The Answer is simple the Democrats do not want to fix the educations system.

They continue to blame the funding even though we invest more in education that anywhere in the world And they oppose vouchers as it would end the lie that it takes the government to educate the children.

Not to mention that they are very happy with the results of un educated and government dependent children it works to keep them in power

The greater problem is they can't afford to keep holding them back until they do learn to read.

Also, the district makes out less by cramming them than if they had a proper student-to-teacher ration. But, then again, that costs.

I don't see why not. Why should an idiot get advanced to the next grade if he didn't earn it?

Also, the district makes out less by cramming them than if they had a proper student-to-teacher ration. But, then again, that costs

Define "proper" student to teacher ratio. If a teacher has a classroom full of about 45 students who are there to learn and are well behaved, that teacher will do a better job than one with classroom with 10 fuckups who don't give a rat's ass about education.

You DID hit the nail on the head. "That costs."
It's not about education that child. It's about creating jobs for underachieving teachers and useless administrators.

this is not true in MI at least they get paid over 13K per student it does not change if the student is held back. It is the self esteem crap that the schools are pushing that is causing them to toss personal responsibility aside in favor of stupid kids.

So in order to protect the anointed ones from competition, they discovered that the way forward in Hereditary Class Supremacy was to dumb down the public schools.

My thoughts are as follows:

1. Fox News (and MSNBC for that matter) are best viewed with the sound muted.

2. Kennedy was better on MTV than Fox and she's better looking nude on a horse than fully clothed. (see below)*

3. Public schools are a good thing, but we have problems with our educational system that need to be resolved. Personally, I blame the fucking lawyers.

4. Kennedy is a political satirist. I don't watch Fox, but that's how Wiki describes her: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennedy_%28commentator%29

I have never heard of her. I refuse to pay Comcast's outrageous charges just to watch FOX, and besides that, we have a local affiliate that broadcasts a few of the FOX news. I have to be wide awake at 6 AM on Sunday just to watch FOX News. I am too much a night owl to get to sleep so early in the AM and then rise and shine at 6 AM.

My view is that the more local one is, the better able to serve students.

Now, what is really at dispute in education? I believe Science courses and mathematics courses can be standardized with no harm. English and languages as well.

Essentially it is history that is at question. Maybe courses designed to help kids think.

One thing I learned from Governor Scott of Florida is how his state works. Many states break up education to small units. His sets up education per each county and not local districts. CA uses the very small local system. My city for instance has more control and is not bound by the County to an extreme. I really am not clear who runs what here. But in Florida, they run by the county.

Yes, if by provocative you mean one-sided and jaded.

I have to conclude that those making such claims really do not watch FOX News.

FOX news is much like a lot of programs. They vary in programming.

They have a pure news section.

The fact that they discuss politics does not mean it is one sided.

They always include both sides.

They really are fair and balanced.

I watched a lot of FOX news until I changed to Comcast. It was part of my then ATT programing.

Comcast began at least 20 dollars per month lower than today. I don't know the ATT rates today but they expected me to pay damned close to $200 per month. This is a full package. It includes phones for business, internet high speed and of course TV programs.
