View Full Version : John Lewis Shames GOP Leaders For Skipping Selma Anniversary

Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) this week joined the Congressional Black Caucus in complaining that none of the Republican leadership in Congress would be attending a commemoration of the 1965 march for civil rights in Selma, Alabama.

“I wish we had someone in the {Republican} leadership going,” Lewis told Politico in an article published Thursday. “President Bush is going to be there, but I think it would have been fitting and appropriate for them to make a trip.”

Lewis took part in the historic march alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In his criticism, he was joined by Rep. Marsha Fudge (D-OH) and the caucus chairman, Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), who was less gentle in his condemnation.

“It is very disappointing that not a single Republican leader sees the value in participating in this 50th commemoration of the signing of the Voting Rights Act. I had hoped that some of the leadership would attend, but apparently none of them will,” Butterfield told Politico.

“The Republicans always talk about trying to change their brand and be more appealing to minority folks and be in touch with the interests of African-Americans," he added. "This is very disappointing.”

The article noted that Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL) co-sponsored the event and encouraged at least 23 other GOPers to join them.

And not a Republican in sight...Why?

Scores of U.S. lawmakers are converging on tiny Selma, Alabama, for a large commemoration of a civil rights anniversary. But their ranks don’t include a single member of House Republican leadership — a point that isn’t lost on congressional black leaders.

None of the top leaders — House Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy or Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was once thought likely to attend to atone for reports that he once spoke before a white supremacist group — will be in Selma for the three-day event that commemorates the 1965 march and the violence that protesters faced at the hands of white police officers. A number of rank-and-file Republicans have been aggressively lobbying their colleagues to attend, and several black lawmakers concurred.

Have you been to Selma?

Democrats go there to get their pictures taken. then they leave. It remains a miserable place. Democrats need the photo-op.

I think miserable in his terms, means that some folks there did some bad things, but he rather focus on the bad things "other" folks do.

It is a miserable place. Politicians, democrats mostly, believe they nee to go there to have their photo taken. They don't stay and work.

True, this weekend marks the 50th anniversary of events that some people think were important. Kinda like some people like to go to Washington for the 4th of July or Pearl Harbor to remember the historic events that happened there. No one is required to go if it doesn't interest them.

Wait, are these the same Republicans that were so "outraged" how they didn't get invited to the MLK 50 anniversary event?

Color me shocked.

It's as if they don't want to ever get elected again.

Maybe it's easier than governing.

2016 should be the year of the GOP...if they can get their act together. Things like this will not help. GWB attended so that will help Jeb but I haven't heard of any other prominent repubs attending.
