The White House released its annual report to Congress on staff salaries. At 4:39 p.m. on Friday.A quick review found the White House payroll appears to have grown since last year, going from $37.1 million in 2011 to $37.8 million in 2012. The number of employees listed also grew -- from 454 last year to 468 in 2012.White House (http://www.politico.com/tag/white-house) officials did not immediately respond to a message seeking explanation of the growth. Overall, the payroll has shrunk since 2009, when it totaled $39.1 million.(PHOTOS: Lawmakers' wealth (http://www.politico.com/gallery/2012/06/lawmakers-wealth/000202-002502.html))On this year's report, there were 68 special assistants to the president, 22 assistants to the president and 24 deputy assistants. They cover a wide range of specializations from legislative affairs to economic policy and presidential correspondence. The full report can be seen here (http://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/disclosures/annual-records/2012).http://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/disclosures/annual-records/2012

Thought we all had to do our part, sacrifice, have skin in the game. I know when they can't hand out those SS and medicare checks because of the debt ceiling, you know those so called entitlement programs that people paid into for 50 years, how about instead of that, congress and the president don't get paid!!!!

President Barack Obama believes that you should reward your friends and punish your enemies. That, and buying friends is the Chicago Way and the President Obama way. Unfortunately, President Obama's friends are usually not friends of the U.S.A. and friends of the U.S.A. are not friends of President Obama.

You get a chance to fix this in a few months, take it.

Just another example of the ruling class running the country to get rich and taking it from and ruining it for the country class.

Great answer. You are so eloquent that my knees tremble.

No seriously...cut all of washington's salaries by 1/2 until the budget is balanced. They might then just start to do something useful.

Their wages and benefits grossly outdo the private sector anyway. Cut them to the bone and no more inside trading, land deals, mortgage deals and anything else they become rich on while supposedly serving "We the People".

Then hit that White House Spending for all the extra Staff and parties, extra security, Vacations all over the place requiring the spending of more money.

Then to top it off Build Some type of College like Dorm For the Pols. No need to be staying in Hotels and whinning about they need a place to live in while in Washington. Either that or like barracks. Something with a day room and a couple of conference rooms. Also no more galavanting around the country giving out endorsements on the taxpayers dime. Give your endorsement from the State they are from or from DC. No where else.

Well, they ARE doing they're part. They took less from the tax payer than they would have in an election year.

They care. They really do.

In the midst of economic stagnation, to be generous, the house servants of royalty are getting a raise and you somehow find equivalency with working for free. Oh, wait, you're a liberal. You can find equivalency for pedophiles and consenting adults.

How about the Presidents Cabinet members and Staff? Do you think they need 12 White House Calligifers (Sp) How many Official White House Photographers do they need? There is a host of really made up titles to positions that just does not make sense in carrying at a time like this in the country. Fair didn't he/Obama say.....Right?

Its really tough for me to make a determination since I'm not employed at the White House and have no idea what justification they have for employing anyone to be honest. Only they really know what their needs are.

But it was suggested that the President and congress should work for free; that was what my original response was directed at.

Not really. The wages of federal workers are adjusted for locality, and the studies that say the feds make too much compare DC wages for feds with wages for private workers in the US.

So???...Those who are supposed public SERVANTS should not make more than the average American or Military personal. That is my opinion. Are you trying to tell me nobody in DC can live on a wage of 50K a year???

I live near DC. I could not live on $50K a year without living like a college kid eating ramien noodles every night and likely having to rent much further away from the city. I could live in much of the US for $50K a year, to include my hometown of New Orleans.

My condo is about 17 miles away from work (not bad when there is no traffic) and it cost me $300K for 1300 sq feet.

Just because your a public servant doesn't mean you should have to starve. Military personnel generally have their housing supplied or receive a housing stipend in addition to other perks that other government employees are not entitled to.

Do you think that you could live in DC for 50k per year? If so do tell us what section of DC could you find housing and still have enough money left over to buy food, clothes, incidentals, etc.

You would have to spend a lot of money on personal protection if you lived in DC for under $50K a year.

If you’re a House or Senate leader (http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Issues/Budget-Impact/2010/07/02/WP-White-House-Discloses-Wide-Ranging-Staff-Salaries.aspx), you get more. The Speaker of the House gets $223,500, while both minority and majority leaders in the House and Senate take home $193,400.

To put that in perspective, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that just 5.1 million Americans earn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_income_in_the_United_Statesmore)more than $150,000 annually out of the nation’s 240.1 million workers. That means members of Congress earn more than 97 percent of the country.

I agree that is too much. But that is not representative of the average federal employee. Here is a chart of the GS scale and another with the DC locality pay included.

As a single father struggling to make ends meet with teenage twin daughters I find this particularly galling.
I would jump on any opportunity to take back some of what I put into government, so while I have no problem with single mothers taking advantage of government provided opportunities to provide for themselves and their children I resent government for not offering the same opportunities to single fathers.
