GENEVA (AP) Scientists working at the world's biggest atom smasher plan to announce Wednesday that they have gathered enough evidence to show that the long-sought "God particle" answering fundamental questions about the universe almost certainly does exist.

But after decades of work and billions of dollars spent, researchers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, aren't quite ready to say they've "discovered" the particle.

Instead, experts familiar with the research at CERN's vast complex on the Swiss-French border say that the massive data they have obtained will essentially show the footprint of the key particle known as the Higgs boson all but proving it exists but doesn't allow them to say it has actually been glimpsed.

It appears to be a fine distinction.....snip~

Yeah, I'm no expert, but I'm familiar with string theory, quantum mechanics, boson higgs, dark energy/matter, and the search for the God particle that ties it altogether. It's complicated, so don't anyone expect me to explain it. I do think there are multiple universes and I subscribe to the big bounce (http://www.universetoday.com/81648/the-big-bounce/) theory. I've thought it was a cycle for years and just recently heard it labeled that way. Didn't know anyone had considered it.

Like you I am a keen Cosmologist and equally conversant with all of the terms you mention .
But will someone tell me how exactly this particle imparts mass ?
The desk I am sitting in front of weighs so much that it would take two very strong guys to raise it and move it a few yards .
When is its weight( mass) imparted to it ?
And in child like fashion , where does this particle carry the mass that it imparts?
What signal gives it the command to "impart mass" etc .
Geneva is giving me proof of a description ( great ) but I would like an explanation to go with it .

Here you go Mr. Grant.....Perhaps some of what he is talking about here might explain it. Also he does note that it may not even be a standard Higgs boson particle.

You should have some doubt. ;-) As an atheist I will view all knowledge with an open mind.

What makes you want to suggest otherwise of me?

I'm fairly sure you have little idea where my religious ideology stands, and that makes your statement somewhat ignorant.

Plus it was merely a wisecrack, as if that needed explanation.

Infinity.....the Physicist's Nightmare! According to cern they discovered the signature and that this may even lead to the theory of other dimensions. Moreover wasn't there something about a moneth ago with Physicists saying tha would know what Dark Energy by breaking thru the fabric of space?

Can't even begin to see the connection with Religion .
As I understand matters , the work suggests they have proof of a single Bosun particle as required by the standard model .
However , other and increasingly preferred models predict five or more Bosun type particles depending on which Super Symmetry body of maths you look at . Gets more complex .
And as you rightly say , whilst this field treatment analysis gives an explanation of mass , there is still the other 96% of the Universe to find out about -- Dark Matter

Did you watch Kaku explain why? Although he didn't say religion, he said God. Plus Cern still said they have to determine if it is even the Standard Model. Which they allege deals with the possiblility of other dimensions if it not in sense what they state is the norm for the Bosun.

I still would like to see how it plays out with light. Since light is made up of particles that have no mass. Or their correlation with such when involving other realms and or dimensions.

We know Mister Kaku well over here . He is rolled out regularly by the BBC every time there is a programme about cosmology or particle physics etc .
As a celebrity over here frequently says , I will tell you where I am at :
The moment String theory was developed out of the implications of General Relativity , the possibility of of a more than four multi dimensional Universe became a near certainty -- popular figure eleven currently .
Unless you are a specialist and can talk with the required maths , you need people like Kaku to interpret into understandable common reference language . From five or more dimensions there is no way that we can "think and know "as we do on a day to day basis in subjects that can be described in four or fewer dimensions . After four , we we are buggered , to put it bluntly .
But even if we had the all - embracing explanation for our Universe , it would throw no light on ultimate causation -- popularly what caused the Singularity in the first place ( assuming that continues to represent the start of this Universe) or what caused it to change ( popularly the Big Bang ) ?
The ultimate all universes prime cause could still be an older one than the" God" of this Universe who metaphorically dangles our Universe -- as one of an infinite number , on his metaphorical knee .
So . Present Physics research is interesting etc , but can never provide an answer in a logical way (see previous) or in any language we could ever understand because of dimension limits .
Therefore , you must look at ways of entering the "missing " dimensions .
And that is why I now am becoming more interested in after death narratives by hypnotised patients regressed to the point of a previous life death and then reporting .
Of course there will be people who find such a different approach ludicrous but the unanimity of narratives for people exploring the soul Universes is in itself strange and requires explanation before the technique is dismissed out of hand .

Am not sure I understood your point about light .
It makes me think . If a Bosun can be occasionally pressured into two photons , what happens to the Mass . The two photons have no mass -- a prerequisite of being light , but the Bosun did .
Where does it go ? And Why ? And with what implications ?

Excellent Post Mr Grant.....I guess I was with you on the questions of when having no mass. Then they threw me off with all that talk of that Boson now may not be the standard type.

But I do find it interesting. As in the world of the physical universe.

I am almost finished Kaku's Physics of the Future. He mentions that a Class III civilization can survive the death of its universe by created a new one and escaping to it. The new life that develops there would not be wrong to believe in God or Gods.

Proof that atheists' heads would implode if it turned out scientific evidence for the existence of a god was found? We shall have to wait for the latter before we can prove the former.

We're all agnostic given that the proof does not exist.

Given that, some choose to believe, some choose not to.

Thoughts? :undecided:

A: this is not something that was just "found". This is something quantum theorists knew had to exist, we just couldn't and still can't directly observe it.

B: This is a huge discovery though, as this is the fundamental particle of time space which makes up matter, if we are ever able (which we aren't now) to directly manipulate that...well the stars truly would be the limit. Or the edge of our universe would be that is. ;)

C: "god particle" is really a misnomer that stems from one of the theorists stating "that goddamned particle" fifty years back. It really has nothing to do with God or a particle that has God like powers.

D: The large Hadron collider should be shut down and for good too. There's some things we shouldn't play with. Black holes and rips in our time space continuum being one of them. If even one of those magnets are misaligned the slightest when they're busy playing god with that thing should happen, well it's been nice knowing you.
