You can tether off your cell phone, but be careful about data use charges.

You can buy devices from most cell phone providers. Verizon I know sells 4G LTE USB Modems and 4G LTE Mobile Hotspots.

http://www.verizonwireless.com/internet-devices/jetpack-4g-lte-mobile-hotspot-mhs291l-certified-pre-owned/

(Not sure you can access links but your provided should offer something.)

I think it's also possible to set up a cell phone as a hotspot.

But I would think that would be awful expensive and the speed slow.

Why don't you want cable? I use TimeWarner's RoadRunner Ultimate, at around 60 mbps, soon to shoot up to 300 mbps. Have to for work.

Some cricket customer can tether: https://www.cricketwireless.com/o/support/plans-and-features/mobile-data/mobile-hotspot.html

Netzero would work for desktop via DSL: http://store.netzero.net/account/showService.do?serviceId=nz-dsl-bb

DSL usually comes via phone service. At that link if I type in my zip, AT&T, Verizon and others pop up. Here's what Cricket offers: https://www.cricketwireless.com/o/support/plans-and-features/mobile-data/mobile-hotspot.html

I'd think it might be expensive.

It will certainly be zip code dependent on what you can get for the most part. But I have not found anything easy that is cheaper than getting the cable package of phone, internet, TV even though I don't use the vast majority of the TV features.

Why not internet only cable? Or internet only land line.
Both should offer high speed internet. I have internet only cable because I need a high speed connection. For several years they were my only choice. Not cheap, about $55 for 50 MB with 350 GB data which I never come close to using up even with watching Netflix and other services like that. Now the phone company Century Link has put high speed internet in our area, 100 MB for less money than the cable company so I will be switching.

My cable company is Comcast and they used to really suck. Customer service was very poor and they didn't want to maintain their equipment. Good old competition gave them a very expensive wake up call and they have really turned it around in our area. Hopefully they will see that they have to lower their prices to keep people like me from going over to the phone company for my internet.

Two things you can do, you can get satellite which is on the pricey side. Also look for your local phone company specifically and see if they offer DSL in your area.

DSl has limited range you have be within X amount of feet to a station to get it.

I think you can get U-verse from AT&T without any other services...Its set up over existing phone lines.

Most cases DSL and cable have exclusives in an area and other companies wont service that area.

If you get cable.

That would sit between your hotspot and computers. My cable modem, for example, receives signal and sends to my WiFi router. From router I have several computers wired with lan cables, and some, including cell phones, connected via WiFi.

In short, you still need hotspot.
