Indiana’s anti-LGBT law may cost state over $256 million: Center for American ProgressMajor businesses boycotting a new religious freedom law in Indiana could cost the state’s economy some $256.4 million and counting over the next six years, according to the Center for American Progress. The so-called Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which Republican Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed into law last week, is widely viewed by opponents as granting business owners a license to discriminate against the LGBT community.

Several well-known businesses -- including Angie’s List and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) -- have said they will protest SB 101 by eliminating or dramatically reducing spending in Indiana. Angie’s List, a popular website that crowdsources ratings for services, canceled its headquarters expansion in Indianapolis on Sunday, which cost the state $40 million and 1,000 jobs. AFSCME, one of the largest labor unions in the country, said Monday it would not hold its women’s conference planned for October in Indianapolis, costing Indiana $500,000.

“This un-American law allowing businesses to refuse service to gay and lesbian customers sets Indiana and our nation back decades in the struggle for civil rights. It is an embarrassment and cannot be tolerated,” AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders told ThinkProgress, a liberal political blog, in an email Monday.

Indiana is at risk of losing valuable business with several other companies and associations such as the NCAA and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination, which have said they might reconsider future economic activity and events in the state because of the new law. “For us personally in the NCAA, this is a big deal. We’re proud of our inclusive environment in our office,” NCAA president Mark Emmert told ESPNU Monday. “We have to say, what are we going to do if this law goes into effect in July and what’s our relationship with the state of Indiana going to be?”

Republican is not an ideology. It's a party.

Interesting how pro-liberty is anti something else.

I support the right to make the law and the right to vote with pocketbooks. That is the way the system should work. I did hear something kind of ironically funny, the Connecticut Gov that raised so much stink has essentially the same law on the books for 12 years.

Nothing like some fake outrage.

What failed perception? We've all been following this, we know it's true. You have some other way to interpret this?

If the fairyphile management want to lose money by passing up the Indiana market, their Boards of Directors will soon fire them.

Final Four coaches release statement on Indiana's new lawAll four head coaches of the Final Four teams in the Men's NCAA Tournament released a statement Wednesday, defending the NCAA's stance on Indiana's new religious freedom law.

"We are aware of the recent actions in Indiana and have made a point to talk about this sensitive and important issue among ourselves and with our teams. Each of us strongly supports the positions of the NCAA and our respective institutions on this matter — that discrimination of any kind should not be tolerated. As a part of America's higher education system, college basketball plays an important role in diversity, equality, fairness and inclusion, and will continue to do so in the future."

The four coaches, Kentucky's John Calipari, Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Wisconsin's Bo Ryan and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, made the statement during a conference call. Their statement defends the one the NCAA released soon after the bill was signed.

Angie's List rejects 'religious freedom' law fix, calls it 'insufficient'Angie's List calls the fix to the "religious freedom" law "insufficient," becoming the first major local company to reject the deal hammered out by Indiana legislators, the business community and others.

"Our position is that this 'fix' is insufficient," Angie's CEO Bill Oesterle said in a statement Thursday morning. "There was no repeal of RFRA and no end to discrimination of homosexuals in Indiana."

The legislative proposal, announced Thursday morning, would make sexual orientation and gender identity explicitly protected against discrimination in new law. But the proposal otherwise keeps intact the controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act passed by the legislature and signed into law by Gov. Mike Pence.

Oesterle said that, even with the proposed change, "Employers in most of the state of Indiana can fire a person simply for being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning. That's just not right and that's the real issue here. Our employees deserve to live, work and travel with open accommodations in any part of the state."

If the law gives people freedom to choose association, who is being discriminated? How does the law itself discriminate?

Constitutional law lists the suspect classes, and quasi suspect classes. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspect_classification)

The Supreme Court however has not considered the issue of whether sexual orientation fits into any identified class.

I suspect that eventually they will.
