Time for the city and the county to whip out the checkbook ...

*Poster's note: I don't want to imprison the shooter in this case. Just whomever on the PD who made it all possible.

I still don't understand why a 73 year old was doing undercover work. Was it an old age home bust or something?

CS, it's Maricopa County Arizona.

We're talking about police cuts that have been going on since former governor Jan Brewer became governor and Shuriff Joe has ruled with an iron fist.

They've been relying on untrained vigilante types for years.

That makes sense. Donate $1000 bucks at the policeman's ball and you get to play cop.

You're going to defend falsifying police records and an idiot who can't figure out the difference between a tazer and a pistol?

I don't hate cops. I hate abuse and incompetence.

That could help, but this dude went WAY beyond that on money and cars.

This is why I said fire the chief, who had an over the age limit untrained guy on the street with a gun and taser. Seems thats trying to be covered up

The Tulsa County Sheriff's office ordered supervisors to falsify the training record of the reserve deputy (http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/courts/sources-supervisors-told-to-falsify-reserve-deputy-s-training-records/article_a6330f10-a9fb-51e3-ab5e-4d97b03c6c04.html) who fatally shot a suspect after mistaking his revolver for his Taser, sources told the Tulsa World.

Reserve deputy Robert C. Bates, 73, faces manslaughter charges (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/14/us/volunteer-deputy-charged-with-manslaughter-after-mistaking-handgun-for-taser.html) after he allegedly mistook this revolver for a Taser and fatally shot a suspect in an undercover operation (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/04/12/eric-harris-shooting-taser_n_7049382.html)
:

Supervisors at the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office were ordered to falsify a reserve deputy’s training records, giving him credit for field training he never took and firearms certifications he should not have received, sources told the Tulsa World.
Multiple sources speaking on condition of anonymity told the newspaper that at least three of Bates' supervisors had been transferred after refusing to sign off on his state-mandated training. The World notes that "the sources’ claims are corroborated by records, including a statement by Bates after the shooting, that he was certified as an advanced reserve deputy in 2007."

The Sheriff's Office denied that documents were falsified or that supervisors were reassigned because they wouldn't sign off on Bates' training. The office announced Thursday that it will conduct a review of its reserve deputy training program.
This follows allegations that Bates got the reserve deputy position because he'd donated cars and computers, and contributed money to the sheriff's election campaign (http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/04/14/tulsa-shooter-was-sheriff-s-sugar-daddy.html). Former officers with the sheriff’s department told The Daily Beast that Bates, a wealthy insurance company CEO, was a “pay-to-play” cop who'd essentially bought his position with donations.

I said when this happened the chief should be fired at minimum for allowing a 73 yr old not properly trained on the street with a gun and taser.

Police officers are forced to retire at 65

I don't understand how you make a mistake like that. My husband had his Glock on his right side and taser on the left side of the gunbelt. How hard is that to remember even in a crisis situation. The difference is real cops are trained extensively and it becomes motor memory in a crisis situation.
Apparently this man confused easily.

Big law suit on the horizon. Big changes in the department for sure.

I agree with the 65 age limit, although some of the rank positions remain a bit longer in some cases.

My husband retired as captain at 55. The Chief was still working and he was 67 (he did nothing but putting in his office). He's gone now.

Working the road, and working stings, or SWAT is a young man's job.

Yep, particularly considering the inherent dangers involved with in a gun running sting.

Just In

Ok, the Police Chief news conference didn't go well ... it looks like Bates lobbied the Police force to purchase MRAPS and brokered the sale for a hefty profit.

Not only that Bates is the insurance man for the Police Chief ... and who recently did an insurance claim for the police chiefs' son when he wrecked the family car.

He was donating money and im sure he greased palms.

No one in their right mind allows a 73 yr old guy on the street who isnt even a regular officer.
Police officers are forced to retire at 65. He had no business on the street.

Your government hard at work, Liberals.

In Maricopa Co., AZ? With Sheriff Joe Arpaio & headless innocent torsos in the desert Gobernadora Brewer offstage, putting the puppets through their paces? I don't think so, not my government - except, perhaps, through a mirror, darkly.

The place has been going to hell ever since somebody decided back in the '60s that the way to deal with investigative reporting was with a lethal dose of dynamite. & Gob. Brewer encouraged the expulsion of Hispanics (& piously, any other undocumented who happened to be caught. Funny that the local stop 'n' document policy never - TMK - surfaced any other undocumented. Must be karma, or maybe God loves all but Hispanics?)

So, now AZ is facing a school funding crisis (funding based on attendance, including Federal monies), a housing surfeit, plunging land values, lower retail sales (food, furniture, clothing, gasoline). People are fleeing the state - & Gob. Brewer is out of office & home free. Although Sen. McCain will probably hang it up here sometime soon - his noises about running for reelection notwithstanding. Maybe Gob. Brewer & Gov. Sarah Palin will face off to fill the void.
