Last seen 2006.

LONDON (CNN) -- Africa's western black rhino is now officially extinct according the latest review of animals and plants by the world's largest conservation network.
The subspecies of the black rhino -- which is classified as "critically endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species -- was last seen in western Africa in 2006.

Damn.

Scientists have been perfecting cloning and gene splicing and are already looking into resurrecting extinct species. Find samples in museums or where ever, clone those, splice them with very closely related species that are still alive to add variation and after many generations you could have what was extinct. Also, we should start taking samples of endangered species now, as a back up plan for when they are all dead, or inbred.

Maybe the scientists will save our ass after we are finally done destroying ecosystems and biodiversity.

I do not know if that is doable. Nature requires a pretty large gene pool.

horrible and sad. It's all our fault as a species

That is a major obstacle, but some scientists keep trying, and then it usually gets easier or more efficient to do.

And if we prepare now, we can make sure we get a lot of samples for endangered species if they all die later.

Yes, I agree. I think Rhinos in general are sacrificed to the Chinese cultures perceived need for aphrodisiacs.

Right. If there is an alternative, people will usually want to switch.

We could tell people to learn how to farm what they need instead of killing wildlife. Like the tiger farms in China. At least the nature isn't getting messed up then.
