Is Dirty Air Damaging the Brains of Some City Dwellers ?

City air pollution could hurt your brain, Harvard researchers suggested Thursday.

Brain scans showed that seniors exposed to higher levels of the kind of small particle pollution that can come from car exhaust had a higher risk of mini-strokes and a smaller brain volume compared to those living in less-polluted areas, according to the study published in the journal Stroke.

The new findings are "provocative," said the study's lead author, Elissa Wilker, an instructor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School and a researcher at the Cardiovascular Epidemiological Research Unit at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

In fact, dirty city air seems to cause the equivalent of a full year's worth of aging inside the brain.

"It suggests that subtle but potentially harmful effects are going on: The effect on the brain of being one year older is similar to the effect of pollution," she said.

The horrid smog drove me out of the Ellay area in 1971, and I moved to beautiful Mammoth Lakes, CA up in the Sierras to push snow for the ski area. It was not easy. 21 feet of snow drove me out of there in 1974.

Stats show that air pollution can trigger heart attacks and strokes, besides COPD.

Voting statistics support this idea.

Most urban districts are solidly Democratic.

Most urban districts are solidly Democratic. This appears to be a unique perspective in blaming Dems/Libs for smog and brain damage ... I'm sure the circle jerk will eventually lead to Obama ... LOL

It's your claim that urban smog causes brain damage.

I merely pointed out that cities are majority democrat.

When suggests a disproportionate number of below average democrats.

hmm....since (according to some posters) dems are all lazy, sit home on welfare types and repubs are productive business owners....who does that make responsible for all the pollution?

Stereotypes are so much fun.

I find it hilarious that so many conservatives hate city dwellers. Cities are the engine of your economy. They are where advances in science are made. Where commerce is facilitated. Without cities, you'd have no economy and without the country, the cities couldn't exist.

I think much of the political divide is simply urban and rural. Ironically, many of you probably live in the suburbs.

I love the country and will probably retire in a rural area. But I also love the city and all that it offers. Can't do the burbs though. It's either city or country.

I have the best of both. I live in a small town within easy driving of a larger city. I have wildlife in the back yard and can find just about any of the trappings of civilization within 30 minutes.

Did anyone read the article? Does anyone have any thoughts on the methods and numbers and spin put on the story?

On the other hand, China creates the most air pollution and there's a valley where basically everyone has emphysema or other lung problems and needs to wear face masks and the air is brown. I don't remember them reporting any effects on the brain. They must have not been there, or been minor and unnoticable in comparison to the other ailments they were having.

It's nice that the reporters focused on the brain, but can I get a "damage of brain to damage of body ratio". They only studied the brain.

And how much are the effects of air pollution in comparison to the effects of the numerous other pollutants and chemicals we experience on a daily basis. Taking a shit will give you cancer these days. But I'd guess there are more pollutants in urban areas in general than in rural areas, so more damage there maybe predictable.

Is this just another media story?

Cities are nothing without rural people producing their food, building materials and power. Hell without us they aren't even survivable. Notice all the price fixing that keeps the rural world from really charging what they should for those goods.
