Press Secretary Josh Earnest made a subtle omission during his press briefing Monday.

The White House spokesman offered the U.S. government’s “deepest condolences to … the families of those who died in Nepal, but also the families of those who died in India and Bangladesh.” But he neglected to mention another region directly affected by the earthquake’s devastation — dozens of deaths have been reported in Tibet, an autonomous region contested by separatists and the Chinese government.

Earnest’s phrasing Monday echoed a statement made Saturday by NSC spokesperson Bernadette Meehan, who referred to “widespread damage and loss of life in Nepal, India and Bangladesh.”

Though the final death toll in each country is not yet clear, the Associated Press reported on Monday that the Chinese government had identified 20 deaths in Tibet, while only two were reported in Bangladesh on Saturday.

Because fuck the twenty people in Tibet who died in this earthquake, the two Bangladeshis that died are more politically convenient to recognize.

Obama isn't a president, he's a putz.

Some of the most peaceful people on the planet why do they get left behind?

Because Putzident Obama is trying to be friendly toward China, and China doesn't recognize Tibet as an independent state. So if they recognized the suffering as Tibet's, China would be offended. If they call Tibet part of China, Tibet would be offended.

Is it obumer?

Could he find Tibet on a map?

Probably not.

But some undercover Muslim in the White House - Vallery Jarrod for instance - who does the golfer in chiefs thinking for him decided to omit Tibet.

Why would he want to offend China? Lots of his political support comes from those who have their businesses in China. Don't bite the hand that feeds you....

2) Nope, plenty of news to go around. Why isn't this a big deal to you?

It is unfortunate that no US presidents push for or recognize Tibet. But the fact is, they are part of China. In order to maintain normal relationships, sometimes this is what you have to do. If Canada was to say recognize Texas as a separate nation, it wouldn't exactly help our relations.

Side note, there is this perception that Tibet was this idealistic, peaceful utopia before China took them over, because they practice Buddhism. Unfortunately that's not accurate.

Tibet before China was a feudal serfdom with conflict, war among sects, mutilation as punishment and slavery.

Not that it justifies the invasion by China.

Because this:

That doesn't explain why it's okay to acknowledge the tragic loss of life in every country AROUND Tibet but leave Tibet out of the condolences and aid packages.

That doesn't explain why it's okay to acknowledge the tragic loss of life in every country AROUND Tibet but leave Tibet out of the condolences and aid packages.

Probably because Tibet is considered a part of China. The aid packages go to all effected countries.

Probably because Tibet is considered a part of China. The aid packages go to all effected countries.

So send the aid package to China. Address the condolences to "the Tibetan region of China." Why is that so hard?

Because then they would be using this tragedy as a political statement.

Earthquakes aren't the time to "send China a message".

Of course it does.

Passive aggressive posts aside, this tragedy is not an opportunity to chastise China.

I imagine that they will get over it.
