Contrary to goals, ER visits rise under Obamacare

Laura Ungar and Jayne O'Donnell, USA TODAY 10:49 a.m. EDT May 4, 2015

Three-quarters of emergency physicians say they've seen ER patient visits surge since Obamacare took effect — just the opposite of what many Americans expected would happen.

A poll released today by the American College of Emergency Physicians shows that 28% of 2,099 doctors surveyed nationally saw large increases in volume, while 47% saw slight increases. By contrast, fewer than half of doctors reported any increases last year in the early days of the Affordable Care Act.

Such hikes run counter to one of the goals of the health care overhaul, which is to reduce pressure on emergency rooms by getting more people insured through Medicaid or subsidized private coverage and providing better access to primary care.

A major reason that hasn't happened is there simply aren't enough primary care physicians to handle all the newly insured patients, says ACEP President Mike Gerardi, an emergency physician in New Jersey.

More cost.....less health caret and ER visits take even longer.......Good job Obama Care!

And yet liberals keep pushing to expand Medicaid in all 50 states. BTW New Jersey where "Mike Gerardi, an emergency physician in New Jersey."

"there simply aren't enough primary care physicians to handle all the newly insured patients"

Capitulated to Obama and expanded Medicaid. If the SCOTUS knocks down the ACA over the subsidies, the state's that decided to expand Medicaid will be left with a choice to make.....deflate Medicaid back to where it was or find a way (taxes) to fund the whole thing (political suicide for the politicians in office).

Right. Greatly increase the numbers of patients while the numbers of docs, especially primary care, is shrinking.

Always a good laugh when the left tries to imitate the right.

Gosh. If only Congress had authorized those incentives for physician training Obama wanted. But no....they had to fight fight fight!

And, of course, there's this problem I mentioned in the other thread:

...the non-expansion states really are shooting themselves in the foot. They're enrolling fewer people, but paying more to do it. They actually prefer spending more money if the alternative is spending less but helping their own poor with medical coverage.

The Democrats will "eat it" again in 2016.
