I guess that's what they mean by "close" air support. Its a real bitch when you have to call artillery, naval gun support or air support right down on your own position.

I wonder what close air support might look like in the future. I remember when the jump jets came out a Marine general thought they might be used in a jungle setting just behind the lines. He thought they could then "jump up" and engage the enemy. The technology was new and he didn't really understand that's not the way it worked but something similar could be interesting. Maybe some type of drones.

Close air support and friendly fire should be harder to tell apart.
