probably not, no. Many historians believe that without that attack the country probably wouldn't have come together as it did to defend itself. Attacking first would have probably polarized the country in my opinion.

A strike on Tokyo would have been pointless. Meeting the Japanese fleet before they were in range of the islands would have been the obvious counter measure. FDR sent the aircraft carriers out of Pearl Harbor in order to shadow the Japanese fleet heading for an invasion of Southeast Asia. He hoped that the Japanese admiral would get jumpy and attack first. If he knew about the fleet heading for Pearl Harbor at all, he thought it would abort that mission and go help out the Southeast Asian fleet.

Thats why you should be asking them to identify the mistakes made in the past and how one would correct those mistakes today.

Asking if a president should make his decisions based on information which is unknown and won't be known for over a decade is dumb.

We knew before we invaded that Saddam had ZERO to do with 9/11, and we knew within a few months of getting there that Team Bush's assurances of absolute certainty concerning Saddam's stockpiles of WMD's were lies.

Is the world a marginally better place without Saddam in it? Perhaps. He was a total prick and a mean and nasty man, that's for sure, but, unfortunately, the world is FULL of such men and many of them rise to power over their countrymen. Was ridding the world of Saddam worth nearly 40K US casualties, $1Trillion? I would say, definitely not. No, the militarist gov. of Japan would have likely welcomed disgracing the Imperial government - it was the only brake on their military ambitions that they had to pay attention to. No, to strike effectively - it would have been best to strike @ the IJN task forces that attacked Pearl Harbor & Philippines before they struck, but after they were clearly in attack positions. Otherwise, you risk provoking criticism from the World on the basis of pre-emptive attack.

"A nuclear weapon is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_reaction), either fission (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fission) (fission bomb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fission_bomb)) or a combination of fission and fusion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fusion) (thermonuclear weapon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermonuclear_weapon)). Both reactions release vast quantities of energy from relatively small amounts of matter. The first fission ("atomic") bomb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_weapon#Fission_weapons) test released the same amount of energy as approximately 20,000 tons of TNT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TNT_equivalent) (see Trinity (nuclear test) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_(nuclear_test))). The first thermonuclear ("hydrogen") bomb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermonuclear_weapon) test released the same amount of energy as approximately 10,000,000 tons of TNT.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_weapon#cite_note-1)"

For clarity's sake, it would be better to refer to fission or fusion weapons, but the language is already pretty much set. Civilians & the mass media tend not to distinguish between the two - the destructive power of either one is certainly sufficient.

Wanna play dueling Wiki pages, eh? lol

No, I'm good with what I've noted. If you look @ the photo under Nuclear Weapons in the Wiki article, what you see there is a photo of the Fat Man weapon, dropped on Nagasaki in WWII.

Yah, thermonuclear weapons were developed after the fission weapon - because you need a fission weapon in order to trigger the fusion part of the weapon. Popular culture doesn't distinguish between the various types of nuclear weapons. I don't know why - thermonuclear weapons tend to have much larger yields than fission weapons.

I'm trying to figure out why the media is so concerned with what Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and other Republican candidates think about the invasion of Iraq. After all, none of them were a senator, or elected official who had any input. None of them were the Secretary of State who was responsible for applying the administration's policies.

why don't they ask Hillary Clinton what she would do now, or have her explain her votes and actions pertaining to Iraq?

Starting with scientific breakthroughs made during the 1930s, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada collaborated during World War II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II) in what was called the Manhattan Project (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Project) to counter the suspected Nazi German atomic bomb project (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_nuclear_energy_project). In August 1945 two fission bombs were dropped on Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki) ending the Pacific War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_War). The Soviet Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union)started development shortly thereafter with their own atomic bomb project (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_atomic_bomb_project), and not long after that both countries developed even more powerful fusion weapons known as "hydrogen bombs."

Clarify it for ya?

Is the world a marginally better place without Saddam in it? Perhaps. He was a total $#@! and a mean and nasty man, that's for sure, but, unfortunately, the world is FULL of such men and many of them rise to power over their countrymen. Was ridding the world of Saddam worth nearly 40K US casualties, $1Trillion? I would say, definitely not. Nuclear weapons have been used twice in nuclear warfare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_warfare), both times by the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) against Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan) near the end of World War II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II). On 6 August 1945, the US detonated a uranium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranium) gun-type fission bomb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fission_bomb) codenamed "Little Boy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Boy)" over the Japanese city of Hiroshima (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiroshima); three days later, on 9 August, the US detonated a plutonium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plutonium) implosion-type fission bomb codenamed "Fat Man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_Man)" over the Nagasaki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagasaki). The bombings resulted in the deaths of approximately 200,000 civilians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilians) and military personnel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_personnel) from acute injuries sustained from the explosions.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_weapon#cite_note-3) The ethics of the bombings and their role in Japan's surrender (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrender_of_Japan) remain the subject of scholarly and popular debate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debate_over_the_atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_N agasaki).

Interesting stuff, maineman.

clearly, you do not know the difference between nuclear and thermonuclear. both are nuclear. both are "nukes". Go back to the pet forum sweetheart, or maybe find one where you can talk about makeup or pedicures. Nuclear weapons are so far out of your pay grade that you probably should have to show an ID before coming back here.

The difference in the "atomic" bomb vs the "hydrogen" bomb is that the Atomic bomb is a fission weapon whereas the H bomb is a fusion bomb. Both are nuclear.

In his book, before war broke out, he relayed the then known intelligence about iraq.

Rubio said that a president bases a decision on information known at that time. It is true that collecting information is one of the steps in the decision making process. One can't collect information that isn't yet known, but will be a decade later.

Left wing hacks can't seem to come to terms with that. The reason is simple. They are trying to reach for every possible way to relieve our current president of being held accountable for the decisions made on his watch.

Iraq was fairly stable when he took over and now it has spiraled out of control. The left wants to ensure that Obama is sheltered from any and all criticism of his incompetence.

They are hacks who have no concern over anything but party politics

No, you know better than that. I watched that interview three times because I watched it when it repeats through the night. Rubio was very clear and careful with Chris Wallace's questions. Rubio said in hindsight it was the wrong thing to do. He reiterated that a few times to be clear. When pressed by Wallace, Rubio stated the President, Congress inluding Hillary, voted for the war, and Rubio went further to say given the information they had, it was the right decision at that time, everyone believed the information they were given. He added we know NOW that information was faulty, but back then they all believed it.

Rubio said he would have done the same thing with the information they had because the info they had warranted it.

Rubio was very clear that looking back, with hindsight, it was wrong because we have learned since then the info was faulty. He said politicians have to make decisions without the benefit of hindsight. That is true for all our politicians, Democratic and Republican.

Those who voted for the Iraq invasion fall into 2 groups: those who supported the decision with no questions and those who were doubtful but allowed themselves to be pressured into voting for the invasion.

While I don't think much of either group, I have less respect for those who caved to the advertising campaign that led up to the invasion. First on the list of those I hold in contempt for their spineless pandering for public opinion is Hillary Clinton. She had the brains to doubt the information but caved in her position.....and then voiced regret.
