Oil Spill Reported Near Santa Barbara County Beach

http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Oil-Spill-Santa-Barbara-Coast-Exxon-304332951.html

An emergency cleanup is underway Tuesday afternoon along the coastline near Santa Barbara after an oil pipeline leaked 21,000 gallons, some of which made it into the ocean.

Coast Guard crews responded after reports of an oil slick in the ocean, also seen on the sand at Refugio State Beach, around noon.

The slick was initially estimated to be about a half-mile long but was reported to have spread to 4 miles wide by 3:30 p.m.

Aerial footage showed that the spill may have happened in a portion of the pipeline above ground on land near the beach and made its way down to the sand and into the water.

Representatives from the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management, Exxon and the Santa Barbara County Fire Department are on scene of the spill.

Refugio is the first coastline you come too after traveling several hundred miles on 101 .. there is no other accessible beach or coastline area until you get to Goleta ... it's a wildlife sanctuary especially a seal sanctuary (kelp beds) that's an underwater garden with rare shellfish and lobsters ...

Crews Race to Contain Estimated 21,000 Gallons

Video Inside

Officials walk along an the oil-covered beach on May 19, 2015 north of Goleta, California. About 21,000 gallons spilled from an abandoned pipeline on the land near Refugio State Beach, spreading over about four miles of beach within hours.

The largest oil spill ever in U.S. waters at the time occurred in the same section of the coast in 1969 where numerous offshore oil platforms can be seen, giving birth to the modern American environmental movement.

Actually Pismo Beach which is north of Goleta is accessible via 101.

But then you can pick up Hwy 1 which follows the coast all the way up through Big Sur to the Bay Area. Beautiful drive!

21,000 gallons in an abandoned pipeline. Given Santa Barbara will have this cleaned up in a week I think the environmental impact will be limited.

Here is the first thing I thought. Someone slept on 21,000 gallons of oil! That could have been major bank!

You wanna bet BoB? It'll take at least until the end of the summer and the environmental repercussions will be felt for years.

The Santa Barbara spill of 1969 took minimally a decade. Yeah it was bigger and cleanup methods have improved somewhat, but i was there so i know. Was still cleaning tar off my feet in '76.

This pipeline does 20,000 gallons an hour ... compare this to the XL that would have done 820,000 gal./hr ... right over Americas' Breadbasket and Aquifers.

I checked water flow in a 24 inch pipe and it flows at 18,000 gallons per minute.

If the flow was 20,000 per hour, it debunks over 100,000 since the pipe flowed 3 hrs per coast guard reports.

Look, everyone knows there is a leak. But let's not horse crap the public ... deal?

Oil reached along about four miles (six kilometers) of beach, the Coast Guard said on Twitter.

Plains All America Pipeline said it does not know how much oil leaked.

The spill was estimated at 21,000 gallons (80,000 liters) of oil, local media reported.

Plains All American Pipeline, said its scenario (105,000 gallons) was based on the line’s elevation and flow rate – which averages about 50,400 gallons an hour.

Investigators won’t find a cause for the rupture until they excavate the 24-inch wide line, which was installed in 1987, said Karen M. Rugaard, spokeswoman for Plains All American Pipeline.

That is not a very high flow pipeline. I figured at full pressure it could carry about one million gallons per hour. (18,000 per minute x 60 minutes = 1,080,000)

Gov. Brown declares State of Emergency

http://time.com/3891739/california-oil-spill-jerry-brown-state-of-emergency/

California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency (http://cert1.mail-west.com/Qyj5D/janmc7rm5/yuz/w2h56315Qgtm/Qcjrq6k62/nq5/05d1866315Qqv/fph/qoasup?_c=d|ze7pzanwmhlzgt|136681q50ucsnbd&_ce=1432171162.d20ca6f806740da858628af78f2c1354) for Santa Barbara County on Wednesday as cleanup teams sought to limit the environmental impact from a ruptured underground pipeline that might have spilled as many as 105,000 gallons of crude oil.

More than 20,000 gallons are estimated to have spilled into the ocean, seeping through the ground into a culvert and flowing into the ocean near Refugio State Beach, the Los Angeles Times reports (http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-pipeline-santa-barbara-coast-20150519-story.html#page=1).

Oil slicks across a combined nine miles have stretched along the coastline.

The owner of the pipeline that ruptured Tuesday afternoon is Houston-based Plains All American Pipeline, which last saw results for an inspection in 2012.

The line, which can pump as many as 6.3 million gallons a day, averages a flow rate of some 50,400 gallons per hour.

Oil stocks have been a winner for 100 years. The consumer is as helpless as the Washington Generals against the Harlem Globetrotters.

the slick will make haste northward to BoB's favorite beach. :D Sam Kinison had the right definition for all a "beach" means: SAND!!! Let the bikinied bimbos and buff studs parade their wares somewhere else. Open up bars where beach attire is mandatory and we won't need sand, sea shells, sharks, seaweed, jellyfish, and choking salt water.

Not to worry folks.. it's only over 105,000 gallons now, NINE miles long and dead wildlife is everywhere.

But it's sure to all be cleaned up "by Memorial Day"

And besides, the pipeline company has apologized.. i say we give 'em a pass this time.

I'm waiting for Bob to tell us how oil on beaches and wildlife is actually good for them.

If an oil company apologizes and asks Jesus for forgiveness.. then all is well right?

Maybe Bob will drive south and help get it fit as a fiddle for the weekend!

This is the oil that can be seen....let's hope it did not seep into underground aquifers. CA has enough problems with inadequate water supply as it is.

Yep. Dead lobster and fish are turning up on the beach -- not a good sign. It means that a lot of the muck has sunk.
